3/10 Mt. Hood not-quite-pineapple-filled forecast, and Gorge weather forecast. Probably a good week for gardening and riding bikes…

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

If you’re a whitewater boater and you live in the middle of Washington, you’re looking at the incoming forecast with glee. If you’re anyone else, you’re not going to like this, although Oregonians aren’t going to take the brunt of the Maui Magic this week. Pineapple Express, baby. Pineapple Express.

But first, a heads up: Syncline work party on Hidden Trail happens today at 9am. Meet at the bottom of Courtney Road. Then ride, because the dirt is great!

Next, Gorge weather for the next few days: Cloudy today. Upper 30’s this morning. Low 50’s this afternoon. Gusty west wind at 18-23 today. Light sprinkles overnight. Monday: Temps in the mid-40’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Gusty westerlies at 17-21. Tuesday: Temps in the mid-40’s early and near 50 in the afternoon. Light wind. Now… the rain forecast: here’s the problem. Right now, the models show the jet stream aimed just north of us. A 100 mile shift in that track leaves us drenched. As of now, it just looks like we’ll see intermittent sprinkles in the Gorge over the next few days under constantly high overcast or cloudy sky.

The same problem applies to the Mt. Hood forecast: The storm track looks like it will be mostly north of us, but a small shift will make a HUGE difference in rainfall amounts. And rain it will be over the next week, not snow. As of now, the 3-hour precip model is just showing a few tenths of rain per day, at the most, while Washington sees inches and inches of rain… Let’s keep it that way!

Up on Mt. Hood, it will be cloudy today, with sprinkles likely after noon. The snow level will be 7500′ all day, dropping a bit overnight. It looks like we’ll just see .1-.3” rain overnight, with a chance of some snow flurries mixed in. Wind will pick up to W 15-20 mid-morning and W 20-25 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with the snow level around 6000′, rising to 7000′ in the afternoon. There will be rain, sprinkles, or mist in unknown amounts. Models are suggesting trace amounts as of this morning, but who knows what will really happen. Anyway, the wind will be W 20-25 all day.

The snow level rises to 8000′ on Tuesday with west wind at 30-35 early, dropping to 20-25 later. Then the snow level rises further to 9000′ on Wednesday with SW wind at 25.

Temps should start dropping again on Friday, with snow possible next weekend. Hey, at least we aren’t the Washington Cascades. They’re going to see no-doubt, no-question-about-it, inches and inches of rain out of this extended Pineapple Express. Like I said, the whitewater boaters are going to be happy, even if nobody else is!

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

How do you feel about pineapples? I like them. I think they’re delicious. Kayakers like pineapples too, because pineapples contain lots of tropical moisture, and pineapples make rivers rise. Kayakers will be happy this week, especially if they live in Washington, where there will be a lot more pineapples than in Oregon. Skiers will not be so happy.

I know. That’s not what you wanted to hear, is it?

Anyway, on to events. Nate Herbeck presents his short film, slideshow and talk tonight at Columbia Center for the Arts. Bhutan – The Last Shangri-La. 7:30pm. $10. Show up tonight. Then mark your calendar for National Geographic Explorer Charlie Munsey on 3/20. Also this weekend: A work party on Hidden Trail at Syncline at 9am tomorrow. RSVP to kk@gorge.net.

In weather news, it’s a f**king gorgeous day today, and it’s going to stay that way. Sunshine. A high near 50 in the Gorge. Light wind this morning gives way to gusty W 21-24 this afternoon (probably strongest at Stevenson).

Gorge weather tomorrow looks cloudy. The temp will be right above freezing early, rising to the upper 40’s in the afternoon with W wind at 15-18 all day. Monday looks rainy with temps in the mid-40’s early and near 50 in the afternoon. Tuesday will be cloudy, with possible rain. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon.

On Mt. Hood, there’s sunshine to report. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ early, 5000′ this afternoon and 6000′ in the evening. Wind will be light, becoming NW 10-15 in the afternoon.

Clouds move in Sunday morning, with a few rain sprinkles or flurries possible starting around 11am. No significant precip will fall during the day, although the precip rate will pick up a lot overnight, for 1” water value of rain mixed with snow by Monday morning. The snow level will be around 6000′ all day, dropping to 5500′ overnight. Wind will be WNW 20 early becoming W 20 midday.

Monday begins pineapple season, although the bulk of the moisture will head north of us, meaning Mt. Baker will probably see snow, and the central Cascade mountains and Olympics will probably drown under an onslaught of tropical moisture. The snow level will be 5500′ early, rising to 8000′ in the afternoon, but that’s probably misleading as we have warm, wet air moving over the top of colder air at the surface. Anyway, we’ll see snow mixed with rain early, switching to rain. It’s hard to predict the precip amounts right now, as a small shift in the storm track could mean a big shift in precip amountas. It’s safe to say we’ll get at least .5”-1.0” WV by 4pm, with more overnight.

This warm and wet pattern continues through Friday. Happy kayakers. Unhappy skiers.

Now, another reminder for Interesting Gorge. It’s the TED talks of the Mid-Columbia. 3-minute talks on any topic, presented by YOU to a sold-out crowd (every time so far). We need your speaker applications now, or it’s not going to happen. Fill ’em out and get ’em in! You know there’s a topic you’d like to talk about!

Have an awesome day today!
