This planet is too damned light. It’s very hard for me to fall asleep at 8pm when the sun is still up. Doesn’t the sun understand that I need to get up at 4am for work?
Hood 2 River Relay
The Hood 2 River Relay is a one-day event on May 31st. This fun and all-inclusive event is designed for almost any level of skill and fitness, yet competitive enough for the hardcore athlete where participants compete in teams, pairs, or individuals to race from the high slopes of Mt. Hood down to the mighty Columbia River. There will be six Legs that consist of; Alpine ski, nordic ski, mountain bike, road bike, road run, boating (kayak/canoe/SUP) and a 500 meter sprint to the finish line after boating. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s looking like we’ll see some wet snow this weekend. Today, however, looks sunny to start, with high clouds moving in later. The freezing level will be 13,000 all day, falling to 5000′ by Saturday morning. We’ll see rain showers overnight for .1-.3” water value (WV). Wind will be… well, not what the models say: they’re calling for SW 20-30, but it’s actually NW 30-50 right now. So how about we say NW 30-50 early, becoming SW 20-30 in the afternoon. Yeah.
Saturday starts partly cloudy with precip starting around 2pm. The freezing level will be 5000′ early and around 6000′ in the afternoon when the precip hits. We’ll see .3-.5” WV overnight, and I think this will fall as wet snow, for 1-3” of new by Sunday morning. But I could be wrong. Maybe it’ll just rain! Anyway, wind will be SW 30-35 early and SW 25-30 in the afternoon.
Sunday looks cloudy and either rainy or snowy, most likely wet-snowy (aka “snain”), but it’s a hard call. The snow level will be 6200′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. We’ll see .3-.5” WV between 5am and 5pm, for mixed rain and snow of currently unpredictable amounts. Wind will be SW 35 all day.

Gorge Wind
We’re starting off the day with gradients of .04 and .04. That’s enough for 10-15 out of the west, and that will hold for a while today. As a weak weather system approaches in the afternoon, the wind will jump up to 22-25 after 2pm, with 24-28 possible at Stevenson. Expect a couple hours of gusty westerlies in this range near Hood River, Mosier and Lyle, with longer-lasting, steadier west wind at Stevenson and Cascade Locks.
Tomorrow brings light westerlies from Stevenson to Mosier (maybe 8-11 or 10-13) with 13-15 for much of the day east of Hood River with periods of 15-18 and maybe some 21-24 late in the day.
As a stronger weather system moves through on Sunday, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 22-25 east of The Dalles with gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Lyle.
Gorge Weather
Today will be sunny and lovely. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 60’s or low 70’s in the afternoon. Perfect gardening weather. Wind and clouds will increase during the day, and a few sprinkles may fall tonight. Sunday brings low clouds and a chance of rain after 2pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and mid 50’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light west. Sunday starts with showers and rainbows. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon with light west wind.
Road and Mountain Biking
The tack alert continues for Post Canyon and other river-level trails. Surveyor’s is pretty much open, with 12 trees down and some snow at the south end (so ride from the north to the south, duh!). Dog River is clear of trees and snow and ready for the Super D this weekend.

River Levels
The Hood is at 5.0′, the Klickitat is at 2200cfs, and the White Salmon, well, I don’t know. What’s the White Salmon at, anyone? The Wind is at 6.5′, so if you want to do some Class V rafting, you can do that this weekend.

There’s not much going on today, but this weekend is the Oregon Trail Rally. I have a confession: when I grow up, I want to be a rally car driver. That would be so awesome! You can’t drive rally cars in the race this weekend, but you sure can watch, and even better, you can attend the fan party at Double Mountain on Saturday night and meet rally car drivers.
Also this weekend, the Dog River Super D bike race is Saturday and Sunday. Water’s Edge in The Dalles has a half marathon, 10k and duathlon. And Meadows has the Ram’s Head Randonee uphill/downhill race on Saturday.
