Random Morning Thoughts

Life’s difficult decisions: what do I want to cook in my office crockpot on Sunday? It’s a big decision, as I’ll be sharing the food with all my coworkers.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There is no precipitation in the forecast through the middle of next week, at least.

Today will be warm and sunny with a few high clouds over Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be at 12,000′. Temps will rise to 50+ degrees. The wind will be light and variable.

Saturday starts off clear with the FAF at 12,000′. The FAF will drop to 10,000′ in the afternoon, and some high clouds will move in. Temps at 5000′ will be near 50 early, dropping a few degrees in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 15mph.

Sunday starts off with high overcast sky. The FAF will be 10,000 all day. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early, dropping to the low 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 20 in the morning and W 10 in the afternoon.

Coming up Monday, it’s Rotary Night at Meadows. At this point, it looks like Rotary Night will be clear and calm. It’s probably safe to buy a ticket in advance for $15. This supports a great cause – scholarships for awesome Gorge kids – so buy a ticket even if you aren’t going.

Gorge Weather

It’s so cold out there this morning that walking outside triggered my Reynaud’s. Now my fingers are turning white. The roads and cars are frosty, and the sky has a thin haze of high clouds. So, it’s going to be partly cloudy with filtered sun in the Gorge today. Expect temps to warm to 40 degrees. Tomorrow starts off in the upper 20’s, warming to the low 40’s, with increasing clouds. Sunday starts off with some high clouds, and it looks like we may see a bit of an inversion cloud too. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a stiff east breeze at Rooster this morning. The E .14 gradient will drive 35-45mph at Rooster today and 25-29 at Steven’s Locks. Tomorrow starts with E 26-30 at Rooster, fading to 17-21 in the afternoon. Sunday brings light wind, probably an E-switching-to-W scenario. Strong east wind returns Monday and Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

As of yesterday afternoon, everything above the fence at Syncline was a muddy mess. With colder temps this morning, the freeze-thaw will be worse, so please don’t ride there or you’ll be doing major trail damage from bottom to top. As of yesterday afternoon, Post was frozen solid and riding great. The road riding was excellent yesterday too, if a bit chilly with the east wind. The higher you go, the warmer it will be.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Not much happening today, but Meadows has a rail jam tomorrow night. And the Seahawks play on the TV screen at Dirty Fingers on Sunday. BBQ. Bring a dish to share. Skibowl is opening the Multorpor lift Saturday-Monday.

Also, please take these surveys. Five minutes of your time will help shape the future of Gorge trails. If nothing else, please do the Lyle survey. It’s very quick, and very important. Take the Lyle trail survey, assessing the needs for a NEW trail system in Lyle. This is very important. Please take 5 minutes to fill it out. Next, please fill out the slightly longer survey about cycling needs and usage in the Columbia Gorge.

Have an awesome day today!

Random Morning Thoughts

This birthday card thing has got me thinking… the world would be a better place and people would be happier if they knew how loved they are. So take some time today and tell just one person not related to you how much you care and why you love them. And ask them to do the same to someone else.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Uh… yesterday I meant to say that Skibowl is opening Multorpor on SATURDAY. Not Friday. I’m not sure how I screwed that up, as I’d just finished reading the press release, but I did. But that allows me to mention it again, I guess. Still no word on the nachos.

There is no precipitation forecast for Mt. Hood in the next week. That’s a good thing, really, as it’s going to be warm up there. Expect a sunny day today with the free air freezing level (FAF) around 12,000′ with light and variable wind becoming NW at 10mph in the afternoon. High temps at 5000′ will be in the mid-50’s.

Tomorrow looks like a carbon copy of today. Saturday sees the FAF at 12,000′ with temps at 5000′ around 50 degrees early, dropping into the mid-40’s in the afternoon with SW wind at 10mph. High clouds may move in during the afternoon. Sunday looks cloudy and a bit cooler.

Coming up Monday, it’s Rotary Night at Meadows. At this point, it looks like Rotary Night will be clear and calm. It’s probably safe to buy a ticket in advance for $15.

Gorge Weather

Morning weather check: my feet are frozen from walking outside barefoot. The sky is clear. Hallelujah. It’s going to be a sunny day in the Gorge! Expect temps at river level to rise to the mid 40’s today with much warmer weather in Parkdale. Tomorrow looks like a carbon copy of today. Saturday looks pretty similar too. Maybe a little more chance of some clouds as the east gradient diminishes, but still likely clear, at least until afternoon when some high clouds move in.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Ok. I don’t know what was going on yesterday, but I said east wind, not west wind. It was definitely west wind in the afternoon on the river, but all the smoke at 500′ was drifting westward on an easterly breeze. Anyway, with an east gradient at .10 this morning, we’ll see the east wind build to 26-30 at Rooster Rock. Tomorrow looks a little stronger at Rooster, maybe 30-35. Saturday brings east wind at 15-18.

Surf Report

Still looks like a nice couple of days on the coast: 7’@14 today with light east wind and a high of 52°. Tomorrow is 5’@14 with light east wind becoming SE in the afternoon with a high of 59°. Yeah, so much for that 68° previously predicted high. At least it’ll be sunny at the coast. You’ll have to find someplace in the mountains for your 68 degrees. South wind on Saturday will make the surf no longer worth mentioning.

Road and Mountain Biking

Aargh. I was so hoping for Syncline laps today, but with an overnight temp of 29°, Syncline is going to do the freeze-thaw thing today. So that’s out. Fortunately the road riding is fantastic right now – I did a valley loop yesterday (Eastside-Wells-Straight Hill-etc), and it was at least 10 degrees warmer in Odell than in Hood River, and apparently it was 56 degrees in Parkdale. So find a road ride at elevation today, and dress down.

There’s pickup rugby at 3:30pm at Henkle Middle School. At 6:15 tonight, the folks from the Hood River Running Club are getting together at the Event Site to do speed drills. They’ll also be doing a run Saturday at Post Canyon.
