Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve never been so happy to be at work. I’m above the inversion. It’s still dark as I write this, but I’m going to see sun for hours and hours and hours today.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today will be sunny on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ and temps at 5000′ will be in the low 40’s early, rising to the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10 early and NW 15 in the afternoon.

Sunday looks sunny. How appropriate. The FAF will be 10,000′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon with 5000′ temps in the mid-40’s all day. Wind will be NW 10 in the morning becoming a bit more northerly in the afternoon.

Monday starts off clear and colder, with temps above freezing between 3000′ and 9000′, with 5000′ temps in the mid-30’s. Clouds move in midday. Wind will be W 10mph.

Precip starts around 10pm on Monday. Temps will be below freezing at 5000′, but I suspect we’ll see freezing rain to the tune of .1-.2” water value by 4am Tuesday, followed by more frozen sprinkles during the day on Tuesday.

A much wetter system moves in early Wednesday morning. At this point, it looks much too warm to fall as snow, but a lot could change between now and then.

Gorge Weather

It’s cloudy again, and there’s a bit of freezing mist falling from the sky, or there was when I left my house. I didn’t have to scrape my windshield, but I did have to run the wipers. I probably should have scraped for better visibility.

Expect inversion clouds today with temps rising to near 40 in the afternoon. Expect a cloudy start tomorrow with a pretty good chance of the clouds breaking in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-30’s early and upper 40’s late. Monday starts with low clouds and temps in the mid 30’s. The low clouds should break, but high clouds will move in and block the sun in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s nuking again this morning with an E .23 gradient. Easterlies will be 45-55 at Rooster this morning and in the 30-40 range at Steven’s Locks, dropping to 26-30 at Rooster this afternoon. Tomorrow starts with light easterlies, picking up to 24-28 in the afternoon. Nuking east winds return on Monday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hmph. Go to Sandy.

Today is the Cold Lap group cross ride from Dirty Fingers at 3pm. And now I’d like to talk about the aPorkalypse on February 7th. It’s all about bacon, and it benefits a worthy cause., Helping Hands. We need people to cook bacon appetizers, we need people to eat bacon appetizers, and we need people to write bacon poetry. So, mark the date on your calendar, and prepare to eat bacon. Have an awesome day today!

I think I’ve had enough of the Nothing for one winter, thank you. Let’s have some freakin’ weather already!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

More sun on Mt. Hood today. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be in the upper 30’s early, rising to the upper 40’s this afternoon. Wind will be E 20mph all day.

Saturday looks sunny. The FAF will be 10,000′ all day, and temps at 5000′ will be in the mid 40’s early and near 50 in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10-15.

Sunday will likely be sunny, but might have a few high clouds. The FAF will be 10,000′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon with temps at 5000′ in the mid-40’s. Wind will be WNW 10mph.

Things get more interesting midday Monday as a weather system moves in. This is a complicated one, with a couple things happening. Cold air will be moving in from the northeast while a warmer system slides in from the coast. I’m not going to try and predict this until we get a little closer. There’s a lot happening, and the timing of these two events will be key.

My gut instinct says freezing rain, despite the sounding model predicting below-freezing temps from 500′ on up. But we are way too far out to be doing anything more than speculating. Suffice it to say that this looks interesting from a meteorologist’s perspective. And I really only speculate this far out so you folks can make fun of me 4 days from now when it snows a foot. =)

Gorge Weather

It’s another Nothing day in the Gorge today. I went to Portland yesterday, and there was this bright thing in the sky. It hurt my eyes to look at it. And the sky was this weird color… blue… As a matter of fact, all that stuff was happening just 15 miles west of Hood River in Cascade Locks. Blue sky. Sunshine. What the hell? What did we do to deserve this gray blanket between us and the real weather?

Anyway, today will be grey. Temps will be in the mid-30’s early, climbing to 40ish in the afternoon. Tomorrow likely starts off colder and just as grey, warming up to 40ish. Sunday brings a better chance of sunshine in the central Gorge, as the east gradient lessens. If models are right, temps will warm up to 50 degrees Sunday afternoon. I’m not holding my breath for that.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today is the nukingest of nuking days we’ve seen in quite a while. I just looked at the iWindsurf, and it was averaging 38 at Steven’s Locks and 62 at Rooster’s Rocks. That’s windy. Too windy even for Trudy or Larry or me. The gradient, in case you were wondering, is E .32. The nuking wind will continue all day today. Tomorrow starts with easterlies at 30-40 at Rooster, fading to 17-20 in the afternoon. Knock off a few mphs for Steven’s Locks. Sunday brings light and variable wind of some sort.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m going to recommend you do not ride your bike to Crown Point today. I know. You’re astounded at my wisdom. Pretty much anywhere you ride today will have some level of east wind, so if you’re riding in the central Gorge, do it early before the afternoon easterlies pick up.
