Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Yesterday had the best vibe I’ve ever seen at Mt. Hood Meadows. Incredible. Everyone was happy and smiling. I met so many nice people.

I hope that today is the same. If nothing else, the weather will be similar, with sunshine and relatively light wind. The free air freezing level (FAF) this morning will be around 4000′, rising to 7000′ in the afternoon with NW wind at 15mph all day.

Monday also looks sunny, with high clouds moving in during the afternoon. Clouds will increase Monday night ahead of an incoming system. The FAF Monday will be 8000-9000′, dropping to 6000′ or so by Tuesday morning. Wind Monday will be W 15-20 early becoming SW 20-25 in the afternoon.

Tuesday starts off with the freezing level around 5500-6000′, holding through about 8pm, and then dropping to 4500′. There are two systems on Tuesday – a weak one early and a stronger one after 2pm. I think both will come in as mixed rain and snow initially. We’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) out of the first, between 5am and 11am, and then we’ll see another .4-.5” WV out of the second, starting around 2pm. We’ll maybe see a trace of new snow out of the first and then 1-3” of new snow out of the second. Wind on Tuesday will be SW 40 early, SW 25 mid-morning and SW 35 in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday brings orographic snowfall with the snow level around 3500. No significant accumulation is projected at this time, but heavier snowfall comes in after 5pm. Another system is projected for Thursday, with heavier snow accumulation. Unsettled weather continues through Saturday.

Gorge Wind

Today is starting off with a W .05 gradient. That’ll give us west wind at 10-15 pretty much all day. Tomorrow starts with east wind at 25-29 at Rooster and 20-23 at Steven’s Locks, fading to 15-18 in the afternoon. Tuesday starts with light wind that picks up to gusty W 22-25 in the afternoon as a weather system moves through.

Gorge Weather

Today looks spectacular: sunny with temps in the mid-30’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon with light west wind. Monday looks fantastic too, with sunshine tempered by a few high clouds in the afteroon and temps in the low 40’s early and mid-60’s in the afternoon. Tuesday brings some morning sprinkles with rainbows likely, followed by heavier rain after 2pm (rainbows also likely) and moderate west wind. The sprinkles, moderate west wind, and high rainbow chances continue through Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline, Post and Whoopdee are all riding great right now. Remember, the Kreps are putting cattle on their land starting Monday, so no parking along Spring Street next week between noon and 5pm, and NO DOGS on Hospital Hill between now and July 1st. That means everyone. Please spread the word, because the presence of your dog on the Kreps’ land could cost all of us access. No selfish behavior, please.

I love working on the bus. Not repairing the bus, mind you, but working on my computer on the bus at 5:45am while everyone else sleeps.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today looks clear and sunny on Mt. Hood with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 1500′ early, rising to 5000′, maybe a bit higher, in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable (LTV) becoming W 10.

Sunday looks clear in the morning with high clouds moving in late in the day. The FAF will be 4500′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 15 early, rising to NW 25 midday.

Monday starts partly cloudy, becoming cloudy in the afternoon with some precip overnight. The FAF will be 7000′ early and 6000′ overnight, dropping to 4000′ by Tuesday morning. The overnight precip, maybe .1-.2” water value (WV) will likely fall as sprinkles, but we might get lucky and get wet snow. Wind on Monday will be WSW15 early, slowly rising to WSW 35 in the evening.

Another round of precip hits midday Tuesday, with maybe .5” WV. At this point, the snow level looks borderline for the ski resorts, so let’s just wait a day or so and see how things shake out. An even wetter system moves in on Wednesday, but from this long view, that one looks colder.

Gorge Wind

There’s not much happening in wind world. This morning’s gradient is E .04, and that will give us short-lived 17-21 midday, fading to nothing in the afternoon. We’ll see light west wind tomorrow at 10-15 or less, fading in the afternoon. On Monday, we’ll see westerlies at 10-15 or less. Stronger wind returns with Tuesday’s weather system – gusty, up-and-down W 21-24.

Gorge Weather

It doesn’t get much nicer than this in spring. We’ll see temps in the upper 20’s this morning rising to the low to mid-50’s this afternoon with light wind and clear sky.

Sunday starts with temps in the mid-30’s, rising to the upper 50’s in the afternoon, maybe the low 60’s. We’ll see mostly clear sky early becoming partly cloudy with high overcast in the afternoon. Wind will be west at less than 15mph.

Monday brings temps in the mid-30’s early and mid-50’s in the afternoon. We’ll see partly cloudy sky in the morning with cloudy sky late in the day and some sprinkles overnight. Wind will be W 10-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

You will find lovely dirt in Post Canyon today. I’m not so sure about Syncline or Whoopdee – with temps at 28 degrees this morning, there might be some freeze-thaw out there. You will have to go ride and tell me. The road riding will be spectacular, with sunshine and light wind. Yay!

On to Hospital Hill, the Kreps will be putting cattle out starting the 24th. So, they would appreciate it if people would avoid using the area from Spring Creek Corrals down to the Hospital from noon to 5pm on the 24th through the 31st. Also, NO DOGS on Hospital Hill between NOW and July 1st. Yes, that means you and your little/old/blind/etc dog that wouldn’t hurt a fly. By bringing your dog to the Kreps’ private land when they’ve asked you not to, you risk losing access for everyone. Thanks for your help, and please spread the word!

Today is the Skibowl Snow Beach party with pond skimming and wing eating. Tomorrow is the spring demo day at Meadows with free demos of next year’s gear. Tomorrow afternoon in the Hood, there’s ping pong at the armory and pickup rugby in Mosier. Okay, that’s in Mosier, not the Hood, but close enough.

Have an awesome day today!
