Ski to Defeat ALS
Today at Mt. Hood Meadows, it’s ski to defeat ALS. This fun and fantastic fundraiser is doing an amazing job raising funds to defeat a horrible disease. As you’ve probably heard, Fred Noble, doer of so many good things for the Gorge, was diagnosed with ALS in 2010. You can help him reach his goal at this year’s event, his last, by making a donation.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
No, no. Just Mt. Hood sun. Today sees the freezing level at 4500′ early and 6500′ in the afternoon with NW wind at 10mph early becoming N at 15mph in the afternoon. Tomorrow starts off colder and ends up warmer, with the freezing level at 3000′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be N 10-20 early and light and variable in the afternoon. Monday looks sunny too, with the freezing level at 11,000 early and 9000′ later. Wind will be WSW 15 early, becoming W 30 in the afternoon.
There’s a pretty darn good chance Meadows will have Superbowl open today. Bring your beacon, shovel, probe and partner, just in case. And don’t forget that tomorrow is Ski Free Day at Skibowl. If you’re a nice person, you’ll bring four cans of food, but you don’t have to.
Gorge Wind
I’ve seen some photos from the coast over the last couple of days. It’s been looking mighty good out there. Today also looks very windy and wavy out there, but today will be the last of the windsport-friendly coastal weather for a bit. Here in the Gorge, we’ll see westerlies at 15-18 early today, fading to 5-9 this afternoon.
Tomorrow brings east wind at 27-31 at Rooster with a bit less at Stevenson. On Monday, expect high-quality west wind that builds to 28-32 in the afternoon, probably strongest and steadiest from Hood River to The Dalles, but also likely quite good at Maryhill in the afternoon. Monday is going to be my first day on the water. I swear.
Gorge Weather
Sunny, sunny, sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early today and low 60’s in the afternoon with light west wind. Maybe less. Sunday looks, as promised in the name of the day, sunny. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon with light east wind in the central Gorge. Monday looks sunny to partly cloudy in the west and sunny in the east. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon with strong west wind.
Road and Mountain Biking
Manny thinks you should go ride today. He thinks you should do a nice long road bike ride in the sun. How do I know this? Because he asked me to ride yesterday. Unfortunately, I’m working at the mountain, but you could ride with Manny. Or you could ride the Cherry of a Ride in The Dalles today and help out St. Mary’s Academy. Or you could ride fantastic dirt. Post, Whoopdee, Syncline and Nestor will all treat you well today.
River Levels
The Hood is at 5.1′, the Klickitat is at 2400 cfs, and the White Salmon, as of two days ago, was at 4.6′. You people do know you can go whitewater rafting, right? It’s not just for tourists. It’s super fun, and locals can go too.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events
Today is Ski to Defeat ALS at Mt. Hood Meadows. Its also the Northwest Creeking Competition on the East Fork of the Lewis River and on Canyon Creek. If you’re in Hood River this morning, swing by the Full Sail area and check out the high school kids doing their electric car race. Full size cars. 1 hour. Why didn’t we do stuff like this when I was a kid?
Tomorrow is Ski Free Day at Skibowl. You can ski 100% for free, or you can be a good human being and bring 4 or more cans of food for the Portland Police Bureau’s Sunshine Division. The Cherry of a Ride, benefiting St. Mary’s Academy, is happening in The Dalles – they should have perfect weather. Also tomorrow, Dirty Fingers will be showing the Paris Roubaix (hell of the north) bike race on the TV. And serving waffles. For some reason bike racing and waffles go together.
Have an awesome day today!
