10/21. Monday. Gorge (east) wind, perfect dirt, perfect weather, and … well, what else can I say? Fall is awesome!

It’s fall now, and that means it’s time for … more windsurfing and kiting! No, silly. It’s time to think about skiing.

Random Morning Thoughts

Don’t get me wrong, I love this weather. But forecasting it is boring. I see a few days off in my future…

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

East winds continue for the next few days. We have a .08 gradient this morning. Not huge, but enough to get you on the water. Expect 22-25 at Steven’s Locks and 25-29 at Rooster Rock by midday, holding through early afternoon. Tomorrow looks slightly windier, maybe 5mph stronger at both beaches. Easterlies back off to 21-24 on Wednesday.

Out on the coast, a lovely west swell leftover from a Japanese typhoon is pounding into the beaches. I tried to check the webcams this morning, but it was foggy everywhere I looked. Fog doesn’t make the waves go away. It just makes for creepy surfing. It’s almost Halloween, so go get some creepy surfing.

Expect light wind on the coast with 7’@16 today, 7’@15 tomorrow, and 5’@13 on Wednesday.

Plain old weather

The weather is going to stay sunny and dry and lovely all week.

Mountain biking

And the dirt is going to stay amazing. Speaking of mountain biking, some friends and I (and a good portion of Gorge mountain bikers) rode Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham yesterday. It’s in fantastic shape. If you’ve never done this ride, I suggest you do it. If you’ve done it, go get it again before the snow shuts it down for the winter.

And you know the road biking is perfect with the light wind. And it’s even better now that Harvest Fest is over and the heavy weekend traffic is done.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

Thursday is Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine day, and to celebrate, Cascade Acupuncture Center is giving away free Focus Acupuncture treatments to people who’ve never tried acupuncture. Sounds like a good deal to me. Free. This is going on all week.

Not much is happening tonight, but tomorrow night is unsafe music at the Ruins, where you won’t be charge $3 to be safe. Tomorrow night is also $12 Prime Rib at Cebu (one of my favorite places), and, if athletic activity is more your deal, there’s pickup Ultimate Frisbee at St. Mary’s Church at 5:30.

Mt. Hood Meadow will be in town taking pass photos on Thursday and Friday: Thursday at the TGR ski move at Andrew’s and Friday at Double Mountain.

Coming up Saturday, there’s the AMS Winter Weather Conference in Portland at OMSI and the HRATS have a Post Canyon work party at 8:30 at Family Man. They’ll be working on Family Man, GP, 130, and various other projects. Also next Saturday, there’s a 5k/10k fun run for all ages (wear costumes) in Parkdale.

Have an awesome day today!

Random Morning Thoughts

Wow. It sure is dark at 7am. No wonder I’ve been sleeping in.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Today starts off with light east wind as a .04 east gradient drives some air molecules through the Gorge. By early afternoon, the wind will switch around, so plan your road bike rides accordingly. And your SUPing. And your fishing.

Anyway, by early afternoon, we should see westerlies at 13-15 near Hood River, and those westerlies will continue to increase into the evening, topping out at 21-24 or so before dark. If we get really lucky, we might see a period of 23-27 before dark, but that seems unlikely with the cool temps this morning.

Tomorrow starts off with light west wind, becoming easterly at 15-18 by late morning. Monday brings east wind at 13-15.

Out on the coast, the wind doesn’t look strong – northerlies at 5-10 – but the swell looks spectacular: W 3@13 today, W 4@12 tomorrow, and W 6@19 (!!!) on Monday.

Plain old weather

Looks like the weather will stay the same through next week. No complaints here.

Mountain biking

Not only is the dirt perfect, but the leaves are changing colors. It’s truly beautiful out in the woods. It’s beautiful out on the road too – I road through Odell yesterday and the Hood River Valley is spectacular this time of year.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

This weekend is Harvest Fest at Hood River’s Event Site. It’s also the Gorge fruit n’ craft fair at the Odell fairgrounds. Coming up this afternoon, the Spokes Club has a work party on the White Salmon bike park from 2pm-5pm.

Have an awesome day today!
