Random Morning Thoughts

I arrived home last night to single-digit temps and no power. Many thanks to Pacific Power for getting my electricity turned back on within 90 minutes. That would have been a cold night.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today starts off clear on Mt. Hood, but clouds will move in midday and flurries will start this afternoon. Temps will be in the teens to 20’s with NW wind increasing to 15-20 by midday. No significant accumulation.

Tuesday looks cloudy, with flurries all day long. There’s not a lot of water value (WV) with this weather system, but 1-2” of new snow is possible. Not likely, but possible. The snow level will be 0-1000′, depending on where you live. Wind will be NW 25 early and NW 15 late.

Wednesday sees a significant change in the weather on Mt. Hood. It looks mostly clear, but it also looks warm, with the free air freezing level rising from 1000′ early to 7000+ in the afternoon. Wind on Wednesday will be NW 10 early, W 10 midday and SW 20 overnight.

Thursday starts off cloudy with temps in the low 30’s on Mt. Hood. Models currently show temps of around 2° C at 5000′ as the precip, currently predicted to be .5-1.5” WV total, moves in late in the afternoon, signifying that this system may start with rain. I’m hoping those models are incorrect, and that we’ll see wet snow instead. Once again, we’ll have to wait a day or two and see where the models end up.

Plain Old Local Weather

Hmph. It’s really cold again. Warmer than yesterday’s 1, but still really cold. In my ideal world, there would always be two digits in the temp, and never a negative sign in front of those two digits.

We’ll see temps warm up quite a bit today. Models suggest we’ll get over freezing, just over freezing, but I wouldn’t place any bets on that, especially as models show the Nothing fog layer coalescing during the day, leaving us without sun.

We’ll see flurries starting this afternoon and continuing through tomorrow. Or maybe we’ll get freezing drizzle. Or maybe flurries. Or… you get the picture. NOAA’s discussion this morning discussed and discussed and discussed the precip type for tonight and tomorrow. Anyway, it looks like a few hundredths of an inch of something will fall today and tomorrow with temps near freezing.

Wednesday looks dry and sub-freezing, as the wind switches back to easterly and brings colder air into the Gorge. That’s easy. Thursday’s the tough day. It now looks like the precip will move in late Thursday afternoon. Temps will be above freezing at higher elevations, meaning if it’s below freezing here in the HR Valley, we’re going to see freezing rain. Crossing fingers…

Gorge Wind Forecast

Gradients have already turned around, and at 5am, there was W .02 between Portland and The Dalles. Now, I’m not saying you should go windsurfing or kiting today, as it’s about 10 degrees outside. I am saying we’ll see west wind in the upper teens near HR today. Tomorrow brings westerlies in the low teens. The wind switches back to E 26-30 on Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

You people were out biking over the weekend. You people are crazy. It’s ski season. Come play at Meadows with me.

Random Morning Thoughts

People keep asking me to ask Meadows to run a bus from Hood River. Okay, people. There’s a bus on Saturday for Brewfest. $10. Leaves the Hood River News parking lot at 10am. Returns at 5pm. You do not have to attend Brewfest to ride the bus.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today brings a few light flurries to Mt. Hood, with less than 1” of accumulation. Much less than 1”, most likely. Temps will be in the single digits. The wind will be light this morning, picking up to E 20 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks very, very cold on Mt. Hood, with temps at or below zero in the morning under sunny skies. Wind will be E 10 early, NE 15 midday and NE 30+ in the afternoon.

Sunday looks warmer, with temps in the teens under mostly clear sky. Wind will be N 20-30 in the morning, rising to N 30+ by midday.

Temps moderate through the week, but the next real system doesn’t arrive until late Wednesday. At this point, snow levels look better than Pineapple-style, but they still look borderline, with 5000′ temps around 34 degrees. Maybe that will change as we get closer. At this point, it’s looking like we’ll see significant ski resort snow at the end of next week, but again, we all know how little faith we should put in those long-range models.

Plain Old Local Weather

Today will be cloudy, with a chance of flurries and temps in the 20’s. Tomorrow will be very, very cold, but likely sunny. Sunday will be very cold with a chance of a few high clouds. It’s now looking like we’ll go above freezing on Monday during the day, dropping back below freezing Tuesday and Wednesday, and then rapidly warming up.

Models are no longer showing any sort of horrendous ice event, but they are showing the possibility of some frozen rain Wednesday night before this cold snap breaks for good.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Apparently there were people out kiteboarding two days ago. People, have you not heard of hypothermia? It’s a deadly illness caused by cold. Hypothermia potential continues today, with east wind picking up to the 40+ category at Rooster. Tomorrow starts at 40ish, fading during the day. Sunday brings easterlies in the 20’s.

Road and Mountain Biking

A friend of mine rode Post Canyon yesterday and said it was “frigid”. So I guess that means it’s good to go: hard, fast and fun.
