Random Morning Thoughts

I’m wondering if it’s safe to go to the grocery store today, or if people will still be circling the parking lot looking for parking spots, like vultures hovering over roadkill.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s now a slight chance of some snow in our future. A small amount. Maybe.

Today looks sunny, with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 12,000′. Temps will be in the mid-40’s to low 50’s today. Wind will be light this morning, picking up to W 10-20 this afternoon. As an interesting side note, I checked the relative humidity values this morning. It’s 10-12% at 6600′. That’s incredibly dry.

On Friday, Mt. Hood starts off clear, but high clouds move in midday and light snow flurries (maybe mixed with rain) start around 4pm. The snow level will be >10,000′ early, 8000′ midday and 5500′ overnight. So, yeah, borderline for snow at Meadows/T-Line base. The GFS model shows .1-.2” of water value, but does seem to be overestimating water amounts lately. Anyway, let’s call it 1” of new snow, hopefully. Wind on Friday will be SW 20-25 in the morning, becoming W 35-40 in the afternoon.

Saturday looks partly cloudy. The FAF will be around 5000′. Wind will be NW 25 early, becoming N 15 in the afternoon. Sunday looks partly cloudy. The FAF will be 5500′ early and 8000′ in the afternoon with NW wind at 25-30.

Plain Old Local Weather

There’s a bit of a low cloud deck out there this morning, and it’s cold. I can’t tell you if the clouds will burn off today, but I can tell you temps will climb near 40° and the wind will be light. Tomorrow starts off below freezing again with another round of low clouds. As a weak system swings by to the north, we’ll see some of the cold, stagnant air get scoured out by a light westerly breeze. Expect temps to climb into the upper 40’s tomorrow with a chance of a few sprinkles late in the day. Saturday brings another round of inversion clouds with temps in the mid 40’s early and upper 40’s late.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today will be an east wind day with 26-30 at Rooster and a bit less at Steven’s Locks. Tomorrow starts with east 15-18 and switches to W 13-15 late in the afternoon. Saturday starts with W 15-18 and fades to light wind in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

27 degrees this morning means the roads will likely have some frost. I’m racking my brain for ideas… if the inversion is 1000’ish, we want rides above that. Goldendale/Glenwood area? Up Dog? Surveyor’s?

I’d like to ask all of you with family and significant others to take some extra time to be thankful for those relationships during this holiday season. Contemplate how your life would be without the support and love those people give you. With that in mind, please show compassion and understanding to those who are not as fortunate as you are. Happy holidays.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, there is still no snow in the forecast.

Today will be sunny, with the free air freezing level (FAF) around 10,000′. Temps at 5000′ will rise to near 50 degrees. Wind will be NW 10-20.

Thursday looks sunny and warm on Mt. Hood with the FAF at 11,000′, temps at 5000′ at 50 degrees, and W wind at 10-20 early becoming WSW 10-20 in the afternoon.

High clouds move in on Friday as a system passes by to the north. The FAF will be 10,000′ early, dropping to 8000′ midday and rising back to 10,000′ in the evening with temps at 5000′ in the low 40’s. Wind will be SW 15 early, becoming W 20-25 midday and WNW 30ish in the evening. We may see a few light sprinkles Friday evening.

Saturday looks to be in the upper 30’s and sunny and Sunday looks like upper 40’s and sunny.

Plain Old Local Weather

As I was writing the forecast, the sky was mostly clear, which was not what I’d expected. So, let’s cross our fingers that the inversion cloud stays away and we see more days like yesterday. Expect inverted temps for today and tomorrow. It will be in the low 40’s, at best, in the Gorge today, under (I hope) sunny skies. Thursday starts off near freezing, with temps rising into the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Friday starts in the mid-30’s, rising to above 50 with an afternoon westerly breeze as the inversion breaks.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The gradient at 5am was E .07, and the models are predicting 26-30 today at Rooster with 20-25 at Stevenson. Wind speeds look similar tomorrow. On Friday, a weak system swings through north of the Columbia, switching the wind to W 15-18 in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Oh wow. I had the best bike ride yesterday: State Road – Cherry Heights – Sevenmile. Yes, there is some frost on all these roads in the shady areas, so be careful, but there’s not much gravel at all. I’m a gravel weenie, and I wasn’t ever afraid. So, for now, you can add those roads if you’re not afraid of frost. That’s my new favorite ride.

I could definitely feel the inversion while I was riding: it was noticeably colder down low than it was up at 1800′. That will be the case for today and tomorrow. Also, for your biking pleasure, you will have light wind today and tomorrow, with west wind on Friday.
