Random Morning Thoughts

You know you’re ready to get out of bed when you roll over at 5:30 and the first words out of your mouth are, “Coffee sounds really good.” Yes, I am addicted to coffee. The taste, the smell, the whipping cream that goes in it, and of course, the caffeine. One of the few legal performance-enhancing drugs. I need that help, because my hematacrit is only 42.2 and I’m going to pass on EPO. =)

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today will be a sunny east wind day on Mt. Hood, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a few wispy pretty clouds form around the mountaintop due to the extra-strong east wind, currently gusting over 70mph at 8500′. As of 6am, there was a thin layer of above-freezing air around 5000′, with everything above and below sub-freezing. Expect the free air freezing level (FAF) to climb to 11,000′ this afternoon with temps at 5000′ around 40. Northeast wind will be around 30mph at 5000′, holding all day.

Friday looks sunny on Mt. Hood. The FAF will be around 11,000′ all day with temps at 5000′ around 40 in the morning and in the mid to upper 40’s in the afternoon. Models are insisting on light and variable (LTV) wind. I’m going to go against the models and say I think we’ll see some easterlies at 15-20, possibly stronger.

Saturday looks sunny with the FAF at 11,000′ early, dropping to 10,000′ in the afternoon with LTV wind. Temps at 5000′ will be nearing bikini temps, with mid-40’s early and low 50’s possible in the afternoon. Sunday looks similar.

The long range forecast shows a weak system swinging over the NW Tuesday into Wednesday, but at this point, it looks above freezing (unfortunately) with light precip (fortunately). After that, models diverge, with the GFS showing weak ridging and the ECMWF showing an arctic cold front. If nothing else, models do converge on temps slowly dropping over the next 10 days.

Gorge Weather

Apparently it’s spring. Why do I say this? Because I saw a photo today of Grass Widows at Catherine Creek. Yep. Already.

As for this morning, it doesn’t feel springlike. My feet are freezing from walking outside. And it’s cloudy. So call today another day of inversion clouds with temps in the low 30’s early and upper 30’s late. Tomorrow and Saturday look like repeats of today.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s another windy one at Rooster this morning: 43mph with the support of an E .23 gradient. That’s enough for 30+ at Steven’s Locks too. I’m sure Trudy and crew will be out causing trouble in the freezing cold wind. That wind will stick around tomorrow for another round of 40-50 at Rooster and 30-something at Stevenson. Saturday starts off with 30-35ish at Rooster and backs off to 15-18 in the afternoon. Less wind at Stevenson, of course.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s currently 27 degrees, which means Syncline is not a good choice today due to possible freeze-thaw. Post before 1pm. Gorge 400. Freezing cold road ride, preferably not in the western Gorge where the wind is forecast to gust into the 60’s.

Remember the days when we all used to Pay it Forward by paying other folks’ bridge tolls? I’d like to remind you that the Port still has ticket books, so even if you have a BreezeBy, you can pick up one of these books and use it to pay for other folks at a discounted rate. It’s fun. Try it.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

From NOAA today: “THERE ARE SIGNS THAT THE WEATHER PATTERN THAT HAS DOMINATED THE WINTER SEASON TO THIS POINT WILL BE COMING TO AN END AS WE ROUND OUT THE LAST DAYS OF JANUARY…AND A MUCH MORE ZONAL FLOW LOOKS TO TAKE SHAPE ACROSS THE CONTINENTAL USA”

Something to note about this… Exactly the same thing was said a couple of weeks ago when the last set of storms moved into the PNW. If, and it’s a big if, if the long range models are correct about the high breaking down, we don’t know how long it will break down for. It could dissipate and leave us in stormy weather for three months, or it could dissipate and return in three days. I’d prefer the former, of course, because we need to build that snowpack. I wish my preferences mattered, because we’d have clear sky every day and a foot of new snow every night. Anyway, just something to keep in mind.

Today looks clear on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 3000′ early, 4500′ midday and 5500′ in the evening. Wind will be NW 15 early, slowly swinging around to NE 20 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks clear. It’s hard to say exactly where the FAF will be – temps will be right around freezing form the surface up to 9,000′ to start the day. By 10am, temps will be above freezing up to 10,000′, with temps at 5000′ in the upper 30’s. Wind will be E 15-25 all day. Maybe more.

Friday looks clear. The FAF will be 12,000′ with temps at 5000′ around 40 degrees. Wind will be light and variable. The weekend looks sunny.

Gorge Weather

I just stepped outside. It’s cold out there. My feet are freezing. But I could see the moon, so that means there’s no inversion cloud. Just some high overcast. Enjoy the sunshine today. Temps are in the upper 20’s right now and will rise to the upper 30’s this afternoon. I suspect tomorrow will be clear. Temps tomorrow will be just below freezing early, rising to the upper 30’s in the afternoon. We’ll see another round of inverted temps on Friday, likely bringing some inversion clouds. Temps will be a couple degrees below freezing early and near 40 in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Apparently there was a gust to 115mph at Crown Point on Monday. I think that qualifies as “windy”.

Today will not be windy, especially not by that definition, as the gradient is sitting at E .01. It’ll increase a bit today, giving us easterlies at 13-15 this afternoon. Tomorrow sees easterlies at 40-50, and Friday brings east wind at 26-30+. Those speeds are for Rooster. Go somewhere else if you want less wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt was spectacular at Syncline yesterday, but it’s below freezing right now, so it’ll likely do some freeze-thaw action today. Apparently Post has been great, and Sandy, of course, is perfect.
