Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
As anticipated, the bulk of this system came in as rain, 2.4” of it, to be exact. Temps are dropping on Mt. Hood now, and wet snowflakes are falling, but it’s too little, too late to salvage the day.
Tonight should be better. We’ll see the snow level drop from 5000′ this morning to 4000′ around 4pm and 2000′ around 10pm. Orographic flurries continue through 4pm, for .1-.3” water value (WV), for an inch or two of snow. After 4pm, much heavier precip moves in, for .8-1.0” WV and 6-9” of new snow. Night skiing should be delightful tonight, if you can handle some wind: Wind will be W 40 this morning, WSW 50 this afternoon, and W 40 overnight.
Thursday morning sees new snow on the ground with the snow level at 1000′ or so. Orographic flurries and sunbreaks continue all day, with just .1-.2” WV between 4am and 4pm, for an inch or so of new snow. Sun is probably more likely than accumulation, honestly. After 4pm, heavier snow starts, with .5-.7” WV overnight, for 6-8” of new by Friday morning. Wind on Thursday will be WNW 35 for much of the day, becoming W 30 in the afternoon.
Friday morning might bring a few more flurries, but it’ll be clear and sunny the the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1500′ early, dropping to 500′ or less by mid-morning. Wind will be W 15-20 all day.
Saturday looks cold and clear, with the FAF at 500′ and light wind. Same for Sunday.
Gorge Weather
Sounds like Parkdale got hit with the freezing rain last night and lost power for a while. I’m wondering about Underwood, because I can’t see any lights up there this morning. Maybe the same? The rest of us escaped the wrath of the storm with just some rain. We’ll see decreasing showers this morning with the possibility for dry periods midday. Heavy rain returns around 4pm, lasting through the evening, and backing off after midnight. Temps will be in the low 30’s this morning, jumping quickly to the upper 40’s when the wind switches, putting an end to this freezing rain crap.
Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with a few showers during the day, becoming cloudier and much rainier after 7pm. The temp tomorrow will hover around 40 degrees. Friday looks cold – in the upper 20’s early and maybe climbing into the low 30’s in the afternoon. Chances are good we’ll see the inversion cloud return, but we can hope that doesn’t happen. Hope springs eternal.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Although the gradient was E .08 as I was writing the forecast, it will switch to west by 10am or so, giving us gusty westerlies at 16-21 in the western Gorge and 26-30 east of, oh, probably east of The Dalles, but maybe east of Lyle. We’ll start with leftover west wind at 21-24 tomorrow from Mosier to Maryhill, with 13-15 in the western Gorge. That wind will fade during the day. Friday starts with light west wind and switches to light east wind in the afternoon.
Road and Mountain Biking
So much for that. The trails are drenched today. Let them rest for a day, and then we’ll see how they recover from lots of rain and above-freezing temps.
