Random Morning Thoughts
I’m doing a 12 hour bike race tomorrow. That doesn’t leave much time for forecasting. I’ll do my best, but I suspect I’m not going to be sending a forecast tomorrow morning. My apologies. And Sunday’s will likely be late, as I suspect I’ll want to sleep in after riding my bike for 12 hours tomorrow!

Gorge Wind
Wow. I sailed for a few hours at Arlington yesterday with the sensor reading 29-32. Then I packed up and went home because I was tired, and the sensor reading jumped to 38-41. I’m sure it was lovely. See, your forecaster blows it too sometimes. If you were sailing at Arlington yesterday, make sure you check out Grant Myrdal’s website on Sunday after he uploads the photos.
Today also promises to be windy. 6 o’clock gradients were .05/.08 east-west and .27 north-south. Those gradients will increase later as the upper level low (ULL) causing the Junuary rain moves east and high pressure builds off the coast. Expect a slow build to 30-35+ from Avery to Arlington by 2pm, with the strongest wind from 2-5. The Rowena stretch may or may not get in on the action today. In the western Gorge, under the clouds, expect gusty 13-15.
Tomorrow’s model runs suggest a very windy start from Lyle to Arlington, 24-27 or more, although models do tend to overestimate morning wind. Anyway, expect gusty 24-27 for much of the day, with periods of 26-30, as a couple of weak weather systems move through. Although it will be windy early way out east, it looks like the strongest wind will pull back to the Mosier-Maryhill section of river in the afternoon, possibly even filling in near Hood River.
Sunday starts off lighter. Models say 5-10, but I think we’ll see 13-16. The wind will pick up during the day as a couple of weak systems move through, giving us gusty 23-26 early and 26-30+ in the afternoon with a chance of showers.
Monday looks windy. Tuesday looks windy. Wednesday looks windy. Blah blah blah blah blah. 12/13 for June so far. I <3 this developing El Nino.
Gorge Weather
It’s raining! It’s raining! This is so exciting! We’ve had .25” already and it’s still raining! It will continue to rain this morning with rain tapering off by late morning. But before we get into today’s weather, I’d like to mention the copious rainbows yesterday afternoon. Yep. Got that forecast right. I sure did.
Anyway, we’ll have showers this morning, with periods of downright rain. Like right now. It’s raining hard as I write this. Expect the clouds to break up a bit this afternoon near Hood River, but not a lot. Mark, there is no need to water your garden today. Anyway, temps will be in the mid-50’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. West wind increases this afternoon. Today’s rainbow chances in Hood River are 74%. In Mosier and Lyle, expect an 89% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow starts off partly cloudy. There will be a very slight chance of showers tomorrow. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon with strong west wind. Chances of rainbows on Saturday are 15%. Sunday sees a better chance of showers throughout the day as several weak weather thingies move through. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early becomes pretty strong in the afternoon. Rainbow chances on Sunday currently sit at 59%.
Road and Mountain Biking
Wow. We’ve had .25” rain in the last 12 hours, and it’s still raining. And that’s on May Street. I suspect Post has seen more rain than that, and it’s still raining. So, maybe don’t go over there this morning, because it’s probably muddy, especially up high (it was a mix of slippery-slimy and dustbowl dryness last night). Maybe the Whoopdee? Or maybe Syncline? Or maybe the 44 Road trails, which have way better drainage due to higher sand content. Yeah. I bet Surveyor’s is SICK right now. And Fifteenmile tomorrow… ooooh that’s gonna be fun!

River Levels
The White Salmon is at 3.1’ish. The Klickitat is at 1570cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 193kcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 238kcfs.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s a work party on the 44 Road SuperConnector trail (that’s the one linking Knebal and Surveyor’s). Meet at Little John at 9am to participate. Tomorrow is also a XC and short track race at Bear Springs. It’s the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon (pure radness and suffering for runners, with proceeds benefiting the White Salmon XC team) and it’s 12 Hours of Post, where a few friends get together and suffer horribly for no reason at all.
For kids tomorrow, there’s a free fishing day at Spearfish Lake in the morning. There’s the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic kids race (all that’s left of the MHCC -sad face-) at Water’s Edge in The Dalles in the afternoon.
On Sunday, there’s pickup touch rugby at 3 at Mosier School, there’s ping pong at the Hood River armory at 3, and there’s the Alternative Ride, leaving Mt. View Cycles and headed to the new cider house in Mosier (sans clipless pedals and spandex) at 5:30.
