7/27 Gorge wind and events

Before you read on, please remember that this report (wind, snow and events!) is brought to you free of charge. Nobody pays me to do this unless you do! If the report saves you time, money, keeps you in the loop, or just helps you have more fun, please take the time to

make a donation. It’s not expensive, not like some other wind forecasting services. It’s accurate, unlike the free choices out there. So donate… $12 minimum donation (or ½ of what I’ve saved you in gas and time!) gets you on the mailing list and in the running for prizes. And your donation keeps the forecast coming almost every day for everyone. Donate, or someday this service won’t be here! Thank you for your support!

I do have some nice business sponsors who give away prizes for my email recipients, people who’ve donated. This week’s is Celilo Inn. When you’re visiting The Gorge, you need a place to stay. Hood River’s a little short on hotel rooms and vacation rentals, as you may have noticed. There’s another option: The Dalles, up-and-coming with yummy food and fun bars with a we-live-here-not-just-vacation-here vibe. Where do you stay? Celilo Inn on the east hill above town, with spectacular views of the river and the dam and locks. Suite rooms with views of the Columbia. Big pillow-top mattresses. A pool. A fire pit. A mini gym. Adventure packages with whitewater rafting and wine tours. And it’s not just for tourists: Celilo Inn can give you locals an escape from the crazy summer bustle of Hood River. We’re giving away a couple of nights to people who’ve donated $12 or more. See… another reason to support this report.

Looks like we’re headed back into a long windy stretch here in the Columbia Wind Tunnel. That’s great news for the final day of the Windsurfing National Championships. As of 5:30 this morning, the marine clouds were still west of Hood River, and there was 25mph dawn patrol at the Hatchery with a .12 gradient. That’s a stellar way to start the day, but I have a feeling the marine clouds may continue to push in past Hood River. If they do, the wind at the Hatch will drop back to gusty 21-24 for the remainder of the day with steadily increasing wind topping out at 28-33 at Mosier, Rowena and Maryhill, with 20-23 at Arlington. If the marine clouds stay where they belong, we’ll see 27-31 at the Hatchery by mid-morning, picking up to 28-33 at Doug’s and Maryhill this afternoon.

Once concern today is the dynamic nature of this system. This could make it gusty and not-good at the Maryhill stretch of the river. Your sure thing today? Doug’s this afternoon.

Coming up tomorrow, less marine push. 15-18 to start near Hood River, picking up to 21-24 by midday. Sunday starts at 21-24, picking up to 24-27. Monday looks windy too.

If you’re out after dark tonight, tomorrow, and really all the next two weeks, keep your eyes on the sky for the Delta Aquarids meteor shower, which combines with very little moon this weekend for good viewing. The show is best between midnight and daybreak, so grab a blanket and a lawn chair and go find a dark spot in the wee hours.

Also today and tomorrow, at a more reasonable hour of the day, it’s the Hood River County Fair at the Fairgrounds in Odell. And once the fair is done, you can do the Gorge Farm Day on Sunday, with a tour of local vineyards, farms and ranches.

Have an awesome day today!

It looks like another nice morning out there for standup paddling and riding bikes. If you’d like to try standup paddling, Windance and Gorge Kayak School have free demos and beginner lessons tonight in the Nichols Boat Basin. The light conditions shouldn’t last too long today; the gradient was at .09 at 7am.

That should give us 15-18 early, rising to 22-25 by 11am and picking up to 24-27 from the Hatchery out to Doug’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow sees a trough of low pressure along the coast, which will bury Portland in cold marine clouds. Combine that with heat in the desert, and it’ll be a windy day around here. We should start with 21-24 near Hood River, picking up to 25-29 midday and filling in to Doug’s, Rowena and Maryhill in the afternoon.

That weather setup holds on Saturday and Sunday, giving us westerlies in the mid to upper twenties both days.

For you moto riders and mountain bikers, heads up that salvage logging is happening on the 140 trail between Post Flats staging area and the top of the 140 switchbacks. There are many trees down on the trail and loggers working in the area, so consider it closed at this time.

Speaking of Post, we’re still looking for the owner of a diamond ring found in Post Canyon. The ring may have been out there a long time, so if you lost one there, please let me know.

Finally, the weekend: Don’t forget about the Gorge Farm Tour of farms, ranches and vineyards, coming up this Sunday. Check out the Gorge Grown Food Network’s website for more information.

Have an awesome day today!
