Before you read on, please remember that it’s pledge drive month for your forecaster (that’s me – Temira). I’m not like NPR or C89.5. No federal funding here. Just funding by people looking for fun. And I need your help to keep this valuable, gas-saving, fun-providing forecast going! Here’s the scoop: It’s fund drive month! If I get donations totaling $15 or more on a given day, I’ll post a forecast the next day. If not, only the people on the mailing list get the forecast. $12 gets you on the mailing list, and gets you in the running for occasional sponsor giveaways. Thanks for understanding that I have to make a living, thanks for helping me do what I love, and thank you for your support!

Tomorrow’s forecast status: 3:30pm. Thank you, 2nd Wind.

It’s another one of those mornings where the wind on the river doesn’t agree with the pressure gradient across the Gorge. At 7am, it was blowing 19 at Swell with a .03 gradient. I think the wind will back off to 5-15 this morning before picking up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River midday and then gusty 21-24 from Stevenson all the way to Arlington late this afternoon.

As a low pressure system moves across the Northwest tomorrow, we’ll see cool and cloudy weather with a chance of rain showers. Along with the fall-like weather, we’ll have west wind at 5-10 in the morning, rising to gusty 17-20 or so. Thursday brings light wind, but stronger west wind should be back for Friday.

If you need a workout tonight, there’s the Tuesday night triathlon practice at Hood River’s Event Site. Join tri-pusher Clint Bogard and the rest of the gang for a three-sport workout starting at 6pm. Everyone’s welcome, even brand-new tri racers.

Coming up for Labor Day weekend, we have the last wind swap meet of the summer on Sunday. It’s at Hood River’s Expo Center starting at 8am and running through noon. On Labor Day, it’s the annual Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim. It’s full, but they’re still looking for volunteers. Email admin@hoodriver.org for information on helping out with the event.

Finally, next Saturday is the start of BTA’s bike commute challenge. Get your bike tuned up and ready to go for a month of bike commuting. You can win prizes and gift certificates from local businesses by signing up at bikecommutechallenge.com for Team Go!

Have an awesome day today!

Before you read on, please remember that this report (wind, snow and events, year round, almost every day – WOW!) is brought to you free of charge. It’s my job, but I also put it out here free for people who need the information to make the most of their free time. But there are five times as many people using it for free as there are making donations, and we all know windsurfers and kiters and skiers have enough money to make a small donation to keep a good thing going. So we’re going to try something new, through Labor Day. It’s a game, and it’s going to be fun. I offer this forecast as an email subscription for a minimum $12 yearly donation. That gets you in the running for a few prizes here and there, and from now on it’ll give you consistency (on the 98% of days I write a forecast. Admit it, that’s pretty amazing for one chick working by herself!). Here’s our new game: If I get donations totalling $15 or more on a given day, I’ll post a forecast the next day. If not, only the people on the mailing list get the forecast. So, let’s see what happens, and thank you for your support!

Tuesday, 7/30 forecast status: Thank you for the donations!

I do have some nice business sponsors who give away prizes for my email recipients. This week’s is Celilo Inn. When you’re visiting The Gorge, you need a place to stay. Hood River’s a little short on hotel rooms and vacation rentals, as you may have noticed. There’s another option: The Dalles, up-and-coming with yummy food and fun bars with a we-live-here-not-just-vacation-here vibe. Where do you stay? Celilo Inn on the east hill above town, with spectacular views of the river and the dam and locks. Suite rooms with views of the Columbia. Big pillow-top mattresses. A pool. A fire pit. A mini gym. Adventure packages with whitewater rafting and wine tours. And it’s not just for tourists: Celilo Inn can give you locals an escape from the crazy summer bustle of Hood River.
.
It’s a cloudy morning in Portland, and the marine clouds have made their way just past Hood River this morning. That means if you want the early session, you’re headed to Mosier, Doug’s or Rowena for 24-28. If we get lucky, the clouds will burn back a bit, giving us a lovely Corridor session of 27-31 this afternoon. If not, you can expect 28-32 at Rowena, Doug’s and Maryhill this afternoon, with 26-30 at Arlington and Roosevelt.

Tomorrow looks windy too, with 17-21 to start, picking up to 24-27 midday from Stevenson out to The Dalles. Wednesday looks just a touch lighter than Tuesday, but the wind should back off on Thursday as the weather warms up and the upper flow turns more northerly.

For you mountain bikers, keep your eyes open while you’re riding this time of year. There are all sorts of good things to eat right now: Thimbleberries, black raspberries, Pacific Blackberries and Oregon Grape are all ripe trailside treats right now. You can compete with the bears and the birds and all the other local wildlife for these yummy natural snacks. And don’t forget about all the domesticated u-pick going on with cherries and blueberries and raspberries.

If you’re up for a casual bike ride tonight, Mountain View Cycles has their alternative ride. It’s a mellow cruise from Hood River to Mosier and back. If you’re wondering, that’s 14 miles in the saddle with 1000′ of climbing. Meet at the shop at 6:30 to join in. Also tonight, free community Tai Chi at Wilson Park in Hood River at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
