It looks like we’ll see another windy Gorge day today, but a passing weak weather system (high clouds are a good sign of this) is going to make it gusty on the river and windy in the upper valley, so wind johnnies and cyclists beware. Yesterday, by the way, there was zero wind in Odell and Parkdale and the road cycling was lovely. Anyway, expect westerlies today at 19-22 near Hood River this morning, filling in from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon, and possibly picking up into the teens further east.
Labor Day starts off with westerlies at 15-18 at the Hatchery and 10-15 near Hood River, holding in the 13-15 range all day long. Tuesday brings one last puff of west wind in the morning before the flow turns offshore, giving us light easterlies in the Gorge.
If you are a road cyclist, be aware that some asshole has been dumping hundreds of tacks in the bike lanes along Dee Highway, between Tucker Park and Dee. Cyclists have been sweeping the tacks off the road, but it appears that someone has been repeating the mischief. So, if you’re cycling Dee Highway, or anywhere else in the Gorge, and see a pile of tacks in the bike lane, please call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line and report it. And if you happen to catch the license plate of the vehicle driven by the person doing this, that would also be appreciated by everyone.
For events today, it is the final multi-sport swap meet of the season, brought to you by the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association. If you want to pick up some new gear or get rid of some old gear, head down to Hood River’s Expo Center Parking lot between 8am and noon today. Swap meets aren’t just for shopping – they’re a great place to catch up with friends and feel like you’re part of the community.
Also today, there’s touch rugby in Mosier at 3pm. And then, coming up tomorrow, it’s the annual Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim, where hundreds of swimmers jump from the Sternwheeler in the middle of the Columbia and swim back to Oregon.
