Sunday. You think it’s cold now? Just wait!

DSC_8321
It’s sunny up on Mt. Hood today, and much warmer than it is down in the valley. The free air freezing level (FAF) today will be 11,000′, with max temps at 5000′ around 40 degrees. Wind will be SW 10 or so all day long. Timberline is running Bruno today from 9am-4pm. Meadows is not running any lifts, but their website says “Setting our sites (sic) on a Thanksgiving holiday operation.” Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off sunny and warm, with the FAF at 10,000′. The weather will change quickly as an Alaskan cold front moves into the area, bringing snow and much colder air. The snow level will fall to 6500′ midday, 3500′ by 4pm, and 500′ by midnight. That’s a 9500′ drop in the freezing level in 18 hours. Whoa! Anyway, precip will start around 4pm and continue through Tuesday morning, for .5” water value (WV) and 4-6” of new snow at 5000′. Wind tomorrow will be SW 20 early, becoming W 25-30 midday and staying there until midnight, when it will become NW 25-30.

Tuesday looks interesting as a much colder air mass moves into the basin east of the Cascades. The snow level will be 500-1000′ for much of the day, falling to the surface after midnight. We’ll see .1-.2” WV during the day. This will first come as westerly-driven flurries, and then will switch to easterly orographic flurries in the afternoon. That’ll give us 1-3” of new snow. Wind Tuesday will be W 25 early, becoming NE 10 in the afternoon and building overnight.

Wednesday looks clear and cold with the free air freezing level at the surface and 5000′ temps in the teens. We’ll also see NE wind at 35-45 on Wednesday. There’s no more snow in the forecast through next weekend, as strong high pressure over the PNW keeps us cold and dry.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s once again nuking this morning, with the Rooster sensor reading 45mph. You can expect the strong easterlies to continue for much of the day, backing off to 30-40 this afternoon. Tomorrow starts with E 30-35 and switches to W 22-25 in the afternoon as a cold front approaches. You’ll find those westerlies through the entire Gorge. Tuesday starts with W 10-13 and ends up light and variable. Wednesday through Sunday currently look like strong, frigid east winds.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our minds are funny things. They are quite capable of creating moments of peace and calm and clarity and equanimity. We’ve all experienced these moments, so we know our minds hold that potential. I’m going to hazard a guess that you, like I, enjoy those quiet mind times.

It strikes me as rather odd that our minds create so much chatter and distract us from the calm that resides within, when that calm is a much more pleasant state of being. How often do you sit and find yourself totally overwhelmed by clarity and peace? Not often, eh? More likely you sit and find yourself overwhelmed by to-do lists, anxiety and worries. Our minds are, for some reason, slanted to bring up the negative more than the positive. Think about it for a moment: it’s totally ridiculous that our minds expend so much energy creating dissatisfaction!

It is possible to change this, I believe. You can do it formally, by training the mind with meditation, prayer, communing with nature, or other forms of quiet contemplation. I think you can do it informally too, by concentrating on and relishing those moments when peace, calm and clarity arise. You can go one step further by giving yourself permission, for a few minutes a day, to stop thinking about your worries, to-do-lists and anxiety about the past and future. In other words, give your mind an opportunity to be nice to you a few minutes a day.

Give yourself permission to be at peace occasionally. Peace is awesome, of course, as are you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have a partial Nothing again this morning and temps a few degrees below freezing. Hopefully you remembered to bring your sensitive plants in last night. I forgot to harvest my sweet potatoes, so I guess I’ll do that today. You can expect temps in the upper 20’s this morning and upper 30’s this afternoon with decreasing Nothing and increasing sunshine. East wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off with the Nothing, becomes clear, develops clouds, and then starts precipitating after 4pm. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon, falling into the mid 30’s in the evening. In an important twist, it now looks like we’ll see westerly wind, rather than easterly, when the precip hits, making for (hopefully) rain-not-snow for the evening commute through the Gorge. However, if you live above 500′, you can expect an inch or two of snow tomorrow night. East wind early, west wind late, no rainbows.

Tuesday looks showery with sunbreaks. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the upper 30’s in the afternoon (maybe a little warmer, likely not). The snow level will be around 500′ Tuesday, so you can expect snow mixed with rain at river level and 1-2” of snow possible above 500′ Light wind. 13% chance of rainbows (snowflakes do not make rainbows).

Wednesday through Friday look super cold, with high temps below freezing. Expect strong east wind and Nothing on Wednesday, followed by clear and cold weather through Friday, possibly through the weekend.

Road and Mountain Biking

I do have some trail reports for you, but they are all a day old, and last night’s sub-freezing temps may have changed things. Syncline, surprisingly, was perfect yesterday. I heard Whoopdee had a little bit of freeze-thaw. It, likely, will be worse today. Post, judging by bikes at Dirty Fingers, was muddy and puddly, but not freeze-thaw. Surveyor’s has snow on it, which means that the 44 Road trails do too. I don’t have a Gorge 400 report, but it’s almost always good, and being under the canopy, does not get freeze-thawed. Nestor, expect for patches of the road, is likely perfect. Road biking… are you nuts? Yes, the tri club is – they’re headed out to Petersburg this morning. Brrr.
