Sunday. Why the Gorge SHOULD be your gym. =)

AnonymousRainbow
Looks like we’re in for another round of wind today, albeit rather gusty and somewhat unreliable wind, but wind nonetheless. But not this morning, unless you’re longboarding or foilboarding. Our 6am (thanks, cat, for getting me up on time) gradients were .04 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .50 (eph-dls), enough for nothing in Stevenson, low teens near Hood River, and single digits further east. As a weak weather system approaches during the day, we’ll see the wind pick up. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Since that’s going to increase clouds and cause some sprinkles in the western Gorge, the Stevenson to Hood River stretch will probably max out at 15-18 today, maybe a touch more if the clouds don’t push too far. Go just a little further east for more reliable conditions, to Mosier, Doug’s, and Rufus. There you’ll find 17-20 midday and 22-25 during the afternoon. Arlington may end up gusty and weird and unreliable due to thunderheads today.

Tomorrow sees the pesky trough of low pressure move east and high pressure build off the coast. This isn’t a perfect setup, but it’s a pretty dang good one. Expect 12-15+ early and 24-28 by late morning, strongest from Swell to Doug’s, most likely. Tuesday looks light and variable and Wednesday and Thursday look like hot east wind days.

Random Morning Thoughts

I find peace in nature. Perhaps you do too. I also find peace, or at least relief, in exercise. But for me, exercising in an urban environment – along a road with noisy cars, say – doesn’t do all that much for me. That’s why the Gorge is my gym. Working out in nature relaxes me, inspires me, and calms me.

I’ve thought a bit about this paradox – shouldn’t exercise be exercise? – and was delighted to come across this article in the NYT yesterday. It discusses how nature changes your brain.

It turns out that a walk isn’t a walk. A walk in nature has profound effects. It decreases activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortext. The sgPFC is active during maladaptive self-reflective thinking (ruminating, obsessing, worrying and also during ‘neural processing of sadness, guilt, remorse, peer rejection, and negative autobiographical narratives’). So, reduction of activity in this area of the brain is associated with just plain feeling better about yourself.

In other words, there’s scientific proof that the natural world is a better gym than the gym. Your takeaway? If you have the time to go for a walk or a jog or a bike ride, take the extra time to make that happen in a green space, rather than an urban environment, if you can. And in the larger picture, this study shows how important it is for us to support parks and green spaces in our communities.

(If you are interested in the actual scientific study behind the article, I can share it with you.)

Gorge Weather Forecast

If you happened to be in the vicinity of Mt. Adams yesterday, you may have seen a rainbow. If you were in Hood River, you just saw pretty clouds. Today you’ll have temps in the upper 50’s early (how pleasant!) and the low 70’s this afternoon with increasing chances of showers as the day goes on and increasing wind too. 16% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow sees temps in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon with dissipating clouds and strong wind. Tuesday starts off in the mid 50’s and climbs to the upper 80’s with no wind and no rainbows. The next 3 to 5 days after that look hot, like mid to upper 90’s hot.

Road and Mountain Biking

What a nice morning for a bike ride! Cool temps and light wind. What more could you ask for? Go get some before the wind picks up. And even if you don’t get it early, it’s going to stay cool today. Just watch out for increasing showers this afternoon.
