Gorge Wind Forecast

The general picture for the next few days includes offshore high pressure and inland low pressure. A thermal trough over the willy Valley on Sunday shifts east of the Cascades overnight, setting up several days of consistent westerlies.

For Sunday, though, there’s not going to be much. Morning easterlies will be int eh 10-15 range from Stevenson to Viento. Expect light and variable wind and sunshine at Rooster Rock (perfect for naked sunbathing), and easterlies that rise to 4-7 east of Viento. By late afternoon, the wind should go calm. It’ll turn westerly around sunset.

Monday sees that heat low out in the desert. The picture offshore includes a low to the north and high pressure to the south, just enough to bring in marine clouds and up the ante on the river. Morning wind starts at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. It’ll build to 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus with a good chance of the wind backing off in the corridor in the afternoon. Why? A wee bit of instability could lessen the wind in the west, as could heat in Portland.

While the instability will be present in the eastern Gorge on Tuesday, the overall setup looks mighty good. Expect 23-26 from Viento to Moiser right off the bat. Westerlies rise to 28-32 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with 23-26 near Roosevelt. As of right now, Wednesday’s looking like 17-21, but there’s uncertainty in the long range forecast, so I’m not able to say anything with confidence about the extended forecast for this week. Summary: enjoy the next few days of westerlies!

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

Local events today include the Adventure Van Expo at Meadows, showcasing all things Van Life. There are sailboat races in Cascade Locks today, taking advantage of the east wind. The Race Across Oregon bike race continues today, finishing up in The Dalles tomorrow.
