Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Snow is falling on Mt. Hood this morning, and the temps won’t be warm enough for anything but snow for a good while. So far today: just one inch, but don’t you worry. NWS has a Winter Storm Warning posted, and Meadows is making noise about opening this week. Timberline’s website didn’t have an update yet, and Skibowl is open for Cosmic Tubing. Teacup hasn’t posted yet this morning, but they’re super aggressive about getting the groom going. They’re sure to have something for you this week.

So… Sunday kicks off with wind and snow and stays that way. The snow level starts around 3500′, falls to 1500′ this afternoon, and drops as low as 1000′ near Mt. Hood tonight. Please consult your metro-area forecast for the deets near your home! During the day Sunday, while the Seahawks are smashing the Raiders, the 5000′ level will pick up 0.6” water equivalent that’s aided by orographics. Call it 7-10” new snow. Overnight, the forecast calls for another 0.6” WE. Orographics won’t be quite as strong, but 6-8” is still possible. That’s 13-18” for this storm. Wind: WNW 50 in the morning (which would shut down the lifts if they were open), W 30-35 in the afternoon, NW 25-35 in the evening, and W 25 overnight.

Lingering flurries Monday morning give way to clear sky and much colder weather overnight. The snow level will be 500-1000′ near Mt. Hood in the morning and 0′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast. That’ll give us 2-3” additional dry powder. Wind: W 25 in the morning, NW 20-30 midday, and variable to 10 from the afternoon on through the night.

Tuesday starts out clear, adds high clouds midday, and tacks on some light snowfall in the afternoon and evening. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′. About 0.2” WE is forecast. As the snow is falling, 850mb temps rise from -9C to -2C. The snow turns less powdery. 2-3” is forecast. Wind: variable to 10 in the morning building to SW 15-25 in the evening and SW 30-45 after midnight. Looking deeper into the forecast, we currently have a prediction of up to a foot of snow on Wednesday followed by several more inches Thursday into Friday. Hi, ski season. Nice to see you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Kudos to the brave souls who made it out on the river yesterday for a chilly westerly session in the Corridor. Westerlies stick around today and then disappear for a while. Today’s westerlies will be in the 18-22 range from Rooster to Swell early. They’ll extend from Stevenson to Arlington for a few hours late morning before fading to 11-14 this afternoon. Rain will fall with the wind. River flow is 80-118kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 46F. Monday starts with light westerlies and switches to E 5-15 all through the Gorge. High temp: 40F. Tuesday starts with easterlies at 10-15 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Rooster. The wind picks up to 20-25 from Rooster to Viento and holds. Generally speaking, we’ll stick with easterlies for a while as cold air pools on the east side.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Rain this morning takes a break midday and returns this evening. Temps will be in the mid 40’s all day and will fall into the 30’s this evening. Moderate westerlies. 98% chance of rainbows. Monday will be partly to mostly cloudy. Temps start in the low-mid 30’s and rise to 40. Light westerlies early. Light easterlies later. 22% chance of rainbows. Tuesday starts off with icy roads under clear sky. Clouds arrive midday, and snow starts to fall in the evening. 2-3” is possible by daybreak Wednesday. Easterlies. No rainbows. Snow continues on Wednesday.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Out on the trails, we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
