Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The overnight storm system had a slow start, but it finished with a bang: 16” of new snow fell at Timberline and Meadows in the last 24 hours. Timberline is opening Bruno’s and Pucci today, Teacup is grooming and should have groom by this afternoon, and Meadows is, as of 7:45am, thinking about opening. No word yet this morning from Skibowl. Good news: quite a bit of additional snowfall is in the forecast for this week, and the longer-range forecasts have several feet of new snow in the next couple of weeks.

Let’s look at Monday – snow flurries continue this morning before the sky clears this afternoon. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ this morning and will fall to 0′ under clear sky tonight. About 0.3” to 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast this morning, for 3-4” additional snow. There might or might not be a trace more tonight. Wind: NW 25-30 this morning, NW 15-20 this afternoon, and W 5-10 tonight.

Tuesday begins clear and quickly turns high overcast. Snow starts up early afternoon and continues into the night. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0-1000′. About 0.1” WE is forecast in the afternoon for an inch of new. Overnight, 0.3” WE is forecast. At this point, 850mb temps will be 0C, so the snow will be thick and heavy. Call it 2-3”. Wind: W 10-15 early turns to SW 5-15 in the afternoon and builds to SW 40-60 overnight.

Wednesday looks very snowy. The snow level will initially be 0′ (but relatively warm, with 850mb temps at 0C to -1C), but it will rise to 2000′ in the afternoon (850mb temps at -4C) and drop to 0-1500′ overnight near Mt. Hood. It’s complicated, yo! During the day, 0.9” WE is forecast by the models, but a period of strong west wind could enhance that. Let’s call it 9-12” new, becoming increasingly light/fluffy as the day progresses. Overnight, another 0.2” WE is forecast for 2-3” powder. Wind: SW 40-60 pre-dawn, W 35 in the morning, SW 20-35 in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday looks partly cloudy with flurries. The snow level will be 0-1500′ near Mt. Hood. Wind will be light to moderate SW. Generally speaking, we’ll be alternating dry days with snowy days for the extended forecast. I mean, that’s generally how winter goes, but there isn’t any sign of a long dry spell for now. Enjoy your turns and your XC skiing!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Out on the trails, we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
