Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood picked up 4-5” new snow in the last 24 hours, and another solid shot of snowfall is on the way today. That’s followed by lesser, but still very welcome, snow through Monday night. Will it be enough for the lifts to turn? Highly unlikely, but it’s definitely enough for you to go tromp around in the snow and have a snowball fight.

Sunday starts off with a quick shot of heavy snowfall and fades to light snowfall by the afternoon. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for 6-7” new snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight. The snow should be relatively light and fluffy and evenly distributed thanks to relatively light wind: SW 20-40 pre-dawn, SW 15-25 midday, WSW 10 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-25 overnight.

Light snowfall Monday morning gives way to partly cloudy sky and perhaps some scattered flurries in the afternoon. The snow level will be around 1000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 0-1000′ near Mt. Hood under partly cloudy sky overnight. About 0.1”-0.2” WE is forecast during the day for an inch or two of new snow. Up to another inch is forecast overnight. Wind: WSW 10-15 quickly builds to SW 20-35 during the day and fades to SSW 10-15 then SE 10-15 overnight.

Tuesday will be partly cloudy then clear. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning rising to 1500′ in the afternoon and 0′ overnight. Wind: SE 15 early, E 20-25 most of the day and E 15 overnight. Thursday and Friday look dry. There’s a chance of some light snowfall on the weekend. Enjoy the beautiful views of the snowy mountains this week!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Chilly easterlies are on the docket for a couple days next week, and there’s not really any west wind in sight. For Sunday, we start with widespread easterlies at 5-10mph. That’s about it for today! River flow readings are 84-134kcfs, river temp is 57F, and high temp forecast is 46F. By the way, there was an incredible amount of debris in the water in Hood River yesterday. Be careful in the river. Monday starts with E 10-15mph near Cascade Locks and only near Cascade Locks. That’s the all-day forecast. High temp: 45F. Tuesday will be dry and cold with temps only rising into the 30’s. Easters start at 30-35 near Rooster, 20-25 near Stevenson, and 20ish near Viento. East of The Dalles, easterlies will be 10mph or so. The wind holds all day. Wednesday starts with E 20-30 but quickly fades to light easterly as the offshore low causing the wind drops south and loses influence.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy weather starts the day and quickly gives way to heavy rain. The rain tapers off after 10am and might totally stop in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Light easterlies. 45% chance of rainbows. Tuesday starts partly cloudy with icy roads, probably adds a Nothing, and then turns partly cloudy again. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
There’s a Nordic ski swap at Working Hands Brewery from 3-6pm today. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Too much rain. Too wet to ride. This will be followed by freeze-thaw conditions. Best riding will be on gravel roads or on pavement. Please don’t ride muddy trails – you’ll damage them, and someone will have to come after you and fix them. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
