Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mountain weather stays warm, too warm for snow, through Monday afternoon. A cold front swings through Monday night and knocks the snow level down below the passes. There’s not a ton of snow forecast, but the snow will slowly pile up. Looking at the extended forecast, there are unfortunate signs of warm and very wet weather early next weekend before a return to snow for the latter half of the weekend. It’ll all work out in the end, right?

Sunday will be dry and cloudy on the mountain until the evening. A bit of drizzle falls overnight. The snow level will be 9000′ for the 24 hour period. Just 0.1” misty drizzle is forecast overnight. Wind: W 25 in the morning, 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 30-40 overnight.

Monday will be rainy until the cold front hits early evening. Snow falls after that. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, 5000′ in the evening, and down around 2000′ overnight. About 1.2” rain is forecast during the day. 0.4” water equivalent (WE) or thereabouts falls in the mixed-precip period between 5pm and 8pm for up to 1-2” of wet snow. About 0.3” WE is forecast to fall as increasingly dry snow overnight for 2-4” new. Wind: WSW 30-40 in the morning, W 35 midday, W 25 in the afternoon, and WNW 20-30 overnight.

Tuesday brings intermittent light snowfall. The snow level will be 2000-2500′ during the day and will fall to 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast daytime, for 2-3” new powder. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind: WNW 20-30 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight. Up to half a foot of snow is forecast Wednesday daytime.

Looking longer range… Thursday looks relatively dry but cold. Temps warm up again Friday morning and stay warm through Saturday afternoon. A truly impressive atmospheric river event (warm and rainy) is possible in that time period – models agree on the generalities but not the details, so we’ll keep watching this closely. After this, there’s quite a bit of model spread but definitely solid hints of colder weather. In other words: it’s going to be a wild ride over the next seven to ten days!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds stick around for Sunday. Rain arrives mid-afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 60’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 88% chance of rainbows. Monday will be rainy all day and won’t dry off until after sunset. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. 67% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be dry in the morning with scattered showers in the afternoon. Showers could be heavy at time and could contain hail. Temps will be in the low 4’s early and near 50 later. Light westerlies. 97% chance of rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Head out to the trails for some brown pow today! Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
