Gorge Wind Forecast

Arlington stole the show on Saturday – everyone was there with all the floating objects. Windsurfers, kiters, wingers, foil people, a jet ski towing in, and Boaty McBoat Face in a Zodiac. That’s it for the nuking wind for a while; low pressure settles over the Northwest and sticks around for at least a week.

Looking at Sunday, we see another dynamic weather day. Clouds this morning are enhanced by a cold front this evening. Its approach will drive gusty afternoon westerlies. The morning starts with gradients of .03 and .04. That’s enough for 5-10 in the western Gorge and 12-15 east of Celilo. Models suggest the wind will go calm, or at least very light, from mid-morning through early afternoon. That’s when our cold front has its impact; westerlies jump to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Celilo from 2-5pm. Not much happens east of there, and not much happens after 5pm other than rain from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 300kcfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp for Hood River is 64F.

Monday’s another cloudy, Junuary-ish day. Showers are possible as far east as Hood River through late morning, and clouds stick around in the western Gorge all day. Want wind: You’ll find light wind early. 10-13 all through the Gorge mid-morning. If you need more, wait until the afternoon when westerlies build to 14-17 from Mosier to Avery. West of Mosier, westerlies languish at 5-10mph, and east of Avery, the wind will be light and variable. High temp Hood River: 67F.

Low pressure continues over the PNW on Tuesday, but our wind might just get an assist from a strong low in the NV/ID area. Morning wind will be 12-15 from Viento to Arlington with 5-10 or less at Stevenson. Not much more happens through early afternoon. Westerlies then start a slow build to 22-26 from Mosier to Arlington by 5pm. West of there, not much. Just 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp forecast is 67F.

Low pressure continues over the NW for the next several days. Stronger, but very gusty, westerlies are possible when frontal systems swing through. Looking at the extended forecast, models are hinting at a broad offshore low in the Friday-Saturday time period. That keeps Junuary and the unseasonably light wind going. Enjoy the cooler weather!
