Gorge Wind Forecast

Low pressure over the region today will keep much gradient from forming across the Cascades. In addition to that, unstable air from the Cascades eastward combines with humidity for a chance of afternoon thundershowers (less chance than yesterday, when the chance was 100%). We’ll have light and variable wind for the first half of the day. NE flow around a low in S Idaho gives us 10-15 out of the NE from The Dalles eastward this afternoon. That easterly flow will spread into the western Gorge too, for light east wind this afternoon. It’s a perfect day for flat-water SUP, and dads can demo/rent free from 11-4 at the Big Winds Event Site location today. River flow is 221kcfs. Temp is 61 degrees.

The Gorge, especially from the Cascade Crest eastward, will continue to be impacted by that Great Basin low pressure dealie for the next few days. That said… high pressure builds offshore on Monday, bringing a return to westerlies flow. We’ll have 10-13 in the morning from Viento to Mosier with 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier (maybe to Doug’s) in the afternoon. The Euro is predicting less wind – just 10-13 all day. The eastern Gorge will continue to have NE or light E flow.

Tuesday might see a brief burst of 15-18 near Hood River in the morning, but the wind will back down to 10-13 and stay there all day. The easternmost extent will probably be Mosier – light wind east of there. Same thing goes with the instability in the eastern Gorge. Wednesday looks like 10-13 with the addition of a good chance of thunder. A pattern change arrives on Thursday, with models both liking the idea of three days of strong west wind.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 12-15. Monday: 24-28. Tuesday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Sunday: 15-18. Monday: 10-13. Tuesday: 10-13+. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 5-10/5-10/20-25, W swell 7′ at 14 seconds. Monday: W5/W5/N10-15, W 7′ @ 13. Tuesday: W5/W5/N5-10, W 5′ @ 13.

Road and Mountain Biking

Holy moly… Hood River got upwards of .15” rain yesterday, and that means you’ll want to find time to visit Post Canyon today. It’s going to be a zoo, so remember: uphill has the right of way, don’t cling to strangers’ back wheels, and be friendly. Other places that likely received rain: Falls Creek, Hospital Hill, Syncline, and Nestor Peak. Front side of Hospital Hill remains closed due to logging. Gunsight is passable (but we have no idea how much snow or how many trees are down – ride time for the one person who did it was 1:48, not a good sign).

Upcoming Events

In Hood River today, there’s all-ages touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11 and free art classes for kids and parents at Columbia Art Gallery from 1 to 3. It is Father’s Day, and all dads are welcome to swing by the Big Winds Event Site location for free standup paddleboard demos from 11 to 4. Looks like a perfect day for it with light wind all day!

Looking at next weekend, it’s opening day of sailing season in Cascade Locks, with free sailboat rides and informal races. It’s also Rock the Point at the Bingen Marina Park with $10 sup, windsurf, standup paddle kayak, sailboat and canoe demos and a concert in the evening for $20. Mosier Fest is next Saturday too with art, music and food and kids activities.
