Wind Forecast

Your Sunday started off with light wind on the river, high clouds above, and gradients that point to another decent day on the river. Speaking of, we may have set some sort of record yesterday for the number of kites on the water at 5pm. Holy moly! Anyway, let’s talk about today. The high clouds point to instability in the atmosphere, and that will impact the wind quality and reliability today. That said, with 7am gradients of .08 (pdx-dls) .00 (dls-psc) and .47 (eph-dls), we’re set up for a windy day. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect a quick jump to 10-13 this morning from Viento to Mosier, followed by 13-16 late morning or early afternoon from Cascade Locks to Mosier. As a weak shortwave approaches the Gorge late this afternoon, we’ll see the wind jump to 17-21 for a couple hours from Cascade Locks to The Dalles, followed by a dropoff to gusty 13-16 from Viento to Mosier while other locations remain a bit windier. The eastern Gorge looks light all day.

That little weather system moves through tonight, possibly triggering thunderstorms, and also setting us up for a difficult-to-predict Monday morning. As best I can tell, we’re looking at 17-21 from Viento to Rufus right off the bat, with the potential for stronger wind from Mosier to Doug’s. As that shortwave clears the area and the atmosphere stabilizes, we’ll see the wind pick up to 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus midday. Expect Arlington to join in late.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tuesday’s setup looks more stable than Monday, but a trough of low pressure moving into BC will affect our wind. Expect 21-24 from Viento to Doug’s right off the bat, picking up to 28-32 by early afternoon pretty much everywhere from Cascade Locks to Arlington. When that trough makes its move, we’ll likely see the wind drop off from Viento to Doug’s while remaining stronger and steadier everywhere else.

Wednesday looks strong and steady, with 17-21 early and 26-30 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was listening to someone talk yesterday about a landlord-tenant situation that’s escalated from a relatively small dollar amount to both parties lawyering-up. I was sad when I heard about this, because I care deeply about one of the parties. I don’t really know the details, but I see this over and over as a mediator. People avoid having difficult conversations by hiring lawyers.

Difficult conversations are, well, difficult. They’re scary. They involve the potential for yelling and screaming and differences of opinion. We make noise in our minds about these conversations; we imagine the worst, then we imagine worse stuff happening on top of that, and then we imagine another layer of difficulty, and pretty soon, we’re creating a mind full of overwhelming potential outcomes.

And then we lawyer-up. Or maybe we just walk away from the situation and end up feeling a lack of closure.

Sitting down and talking is tough. And sometimes it’s impossible to reach out. That’s where mediators come in – they can get two parties to the table, and they can generally get them talking. Mediators go for win-win situations. More importantly, they get people talking face-to-face.

People in mediation learn to communicate. They take those skills out of the room and use them down the road. They save time, money and worry. Next time you find yourself in a situation that feels too difficult to handle, consider finding a mediator (google “community dispute resolution center”). It’ll be scary to sit in the same room and talk directly to that person, but you’ll grow immensely. You’ll grow in awesome ways. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Outside my window this morning were thin high clouds from a marginally unstable atmosphere. The atmosphere this morning is very human, I guessing, containing the potential for volatility if conditions line up just right. Anyway, expect temps in the low 70’s this morning and the upper 90’s this afternoon with more humidity than we’ve seen the last few days and a slight chance of thunderstorms, especially overnight. Moderate wind this afternoon. 1% chance of rainbows, 98% chance of a colorful sunset.

Expect leftover convective clouds, a colorful sunrise and maybe even a clap of thunder tomorrow morning, followed by sunshine tomorrow afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. Tuesday looks sunny and windy with temps in the low 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon.
