Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
The long-range forecast is finally looking up for Mt. Hood! Today’s two-week forecast (which can only happen on days when I don’t have to go to my career job) is (GFS/ECMWF)… 12” total: 100%/100%; 24” total: 100%/90%; 48” total: 30%/25%. Now, that doesn’t mean we won’t have a period of rain in there – that’s quite possible on Monday and also next weekend. But for the most part, upper-elevation temps fall below 0C and snow accumulates.
Sunday will be clear to start. High clouds move in, and some very light snow starts up after midnight. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ this morning and will rise to 5000′-6000′ overnight as 850mb temps rise to +1 or +2C. Just a trace of snow will fall between 1am and 4am. Wind: NNW 10 this morning, variable to 10 this afternoon, and WSW 25-35 overnight.
Monday starts with snow, switches to rain, and switches back to snow at the end of this weather system. The snow level will be 5000′ before this system swings in, then 6000′ mid-morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. Total precip will be about .35” water equivalent (WE) during the day, out of which we’ll see freezing rain, mixed precip, and some snow, for an inch or two of wet snow. Another 0.2” WE falls overnight with orographic assistance, for 1-2” snow. Wind will be WSW 25-35 in the morning, WNW 35-40 in the afternoon, and W 20-25 overnight.
Tuesday starts dry then picks up a few snowflakes. There won’t be much moisture around – the air will be quite dry above 7000-10000′ depending on the time of day. A trace of snow is predicted during the day at lower elevations under partly cloudy to clear sky. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for a couple inches of new. Wind will be W 20-25 most of the day and will rise to W 35 overnight.
More snow is forecast on Wednesday. It’s a little far out for a detailed forecast, but it does appears totals will be in the 5-9” range. Another system on Thursday (again, too far out for certainty) brings 4-9”. We’ll keep watching these. The extended runs suggest the possibility of a low-end atmospheric river on Saturday – the Euro is much more enthusiastic about this than is the GFS. We will keep an eye on it as it carries the potential for consolidating precipitation (aka rain) for the weekend. After that: cool and wet for the extended period. Good for building the snowpack!
Gorge Wind Forecast
Not much going on for the next few days, but the ensembles suggest you should keep an eye on Wednesday for a chance at some westerlies. Sunday: light westerlies early, then calm wind, then easterlies at 10mph at Rooster and Stevenson. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 50F, and high temp forecast is 45F. Monday will be calm all day. Tuesday starts either light westerly or calm. A weather system pushing through could, but won’t necessarily, give us some afternoon westerlies in the teens at Viento and areas east of Rowena. A front swings through early Wednesday and offshore high pressure builds behind. That gives us westerlies of usable strength somewhere in the Gorge…
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Mostly clear sky this morning becomes high overcast later. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 40’s later. Light westerlies early turn calm midday. No rainbows. Monday could start with a few wet snowflakes and then drizzle all day. Temps will be just above freezing early and in the low 40’s later. Calm wind. 4% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with intermittent drizzle or sprinkles possible. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Calm wind early. Light westerlies later. 10% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
