Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Sunshine returns to the Gorge today along with a round of light to moderate westerlies. There’s a better shot at stronger westerlies for Monday, but there’s also a decent chance you’ll need to drive east for best results. Models are calling for lighter wind on Tuesday.

Sunday kicks off with clouds in the west, sun in the east, and westerlies in the 5-15 range all through the Gorge. Pressures are 30.04/29.98/29.98 for .06 pdx-dls. Midday wind drops to 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 out east. There’s a hint of a couple hours of 14-17 from Hood River to The Dalles this afternoon. That’ll shift east to Rufus a bit before sunset. River flow readings are 66-90kcfs, river temp is 62.6F, and high temp forecast is 53F.

A weather system swings through on Monday. The day starts calm for most of the Gorge with gusty westerlies at 14-18 west of Stevenson. As this system pushes in, we’ll see gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to Viento (with rain) and gusty 17-21 out near Arlington. Once the front swings through mid-afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 18-23 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. About 30% of the ensembles are calling for stronger wind out east; 24-28 is possible east of The Dalles, but it’s far from certain. High temp will be in the low 50’s.

Tuesday starts with 11-14 in the eastern Gorge with sprinkles and light wind west of The Dalles. By mid-afternoon, the wind will be light and variable all through the Gorge. Another system swings through on Wednesday, but models are currently lackluster about the possibility of wind. Have a great day today and a lovely start to the week!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams picked up a dusting of snow over the last 36 hours or so, and they’re looking mighty pretty. The next weather system is slated for Monday, but that’ll be mostly rain at ski resort base elevations. Keep your eyes on Tuesday night and Wednesday for a decent base-elevation snowstorm!

Sunday’s going to be a pretty day for hiking – sunny and cool. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. No precip. Clouds move in tonight. Wind: NW 10-15 this morning, W 15 this afternoon, and WSW 25-35 overnight.

Clouds and drizzle start the day on Monday, and the rain intensity increases midday. A cold front swings through in the evening, but most of the precip will be done by then. The snow level starts around 8000′, falls to 5500′ in the afternoon, 4500′ in the evening, and 3000′ after midnight. About 1.0” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. That’ll be mostly rain at 5000′ with perhaps 1-2” at the end of this system. A trace of snow falls overnight. Wind: WSW 25-35 early, WNW 40-45 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with flurries during the day. Moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. A trace of snow falls during the day. Today’s model run has 0.9” WE overnight for 8-10” new snow at 5000′. Wind: W 20 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and WNW 35-40 after midnight. Light to moderate snowfall (a few inches of new) is forecast Wednesday with the snow level around 4000′. The next couple of systems look too warm for snow and could potentially bring heavy rain, so enjoy the snow while it’s around!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky today stays that way. Clouds move in overnight. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Monday will be rainy. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the low 50’s. Light westerlies in the morning. Moderate in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be intermittently sprinkly. Temps start in the low 40’s and rise to the mid 50’s. Light westerlies early become light and variable later. 99% chance of rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Teacup has work parties scheduled Wednesday (26) and Saturday (29). HRATS have a work party at Family Man scheduled for Saturday (29). Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

0.6” of rain fell in the last weather system, which was enough to bring out the brown pow where I rode yesterday. Still not sure whether Post is too slick or perfect, but the longer you wait today (Sunday), the better it should get. Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
