Saturday. This post is a forecast.

2015-07-01_14-28-41 M=A R=8 S=4
It’s snowing up on Mt. Hood this morning, and the snowfall will continue through midday, possibly longer. The models are in disagreement about tonight – one says we’ll get a couple inches of snow, and the other says the stars will come out. So… that’s an impossible prediction! The snow level will be 500′ or so all day. We’ll see 1-3” of new snow this morning, ending by noon, most likely. Wind will be SW 10-15 in the morning and W 20 in the afternoon and evening. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow may start off with a few flurries, or may just be clear with low clouds, staying sunny all day. The snow level will be 500′ or less in the morning with temps between 3000′ and 5000′ rising to 1-2C in the afternoon. Wind will be light S.

Monday starts off clear, turns cloudy midday, and sees precip after 7pm. The snow level will be 6500′ early, dropping to 5500-6000′ when the precip hits. I’m going to call that .1-.2” mixed precipitation between 7pm Monday and 4am Sunday. Wind will be S 10-15 all day.

Tuesday starts off with a little light mixed precip, clears off, and sees another round of precip move in during the evening. The snow level will be around 5500′-6000′ all day, meaning that round of evening precip is tricky to call. As of right now, I’d call it rain, somewhere between .5” and 1” for Mt. Hood.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve had some pretty big conflicts in my world in the last few weeks, and that’s got me thinking a lot about what happens when we are in conflict. We’re wired to protect ourselves – that danged survival instinct! One of the self-protective mechanisms that can kick in during conflict is the dehumanization of the other person. We see this in the talk of demagogues who speak against Muslims, Mexicans, and women. We saw this in the Holocaust, when six million Jewish people were murdered.

We can see this ourselves – sometimes our nervous system turns off our empathy circuits and our sense of connection to another person in order to allow us to defend ourselves more forcefully, more violently. In this space, we’ll do and say things we’d never say when we are in a non-threatened, loving, rational space.

When you find yourself in conflict, it’s important to notice if you see yourself starting to lose connection with the other person. If you can no longer feel them with your heart, and if you no longer see them as a person just like you, it’s time to take a break. It’s in this space that we fight for our lives without regard for the feelings or needs of the other person. It’s in this space that we do things we regret. So, as you head into a difficult conversation, be conscious about maintaining a human connection. Be conscious about feeling your relationship with that other person. Your discussions will go much better if you do. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a tricky forecast this morning with temps just above freezing and precip headed our way. Temps will be in the mid 30’s all day. Expect a mix of rain and snow (sticking above 500′) today, midday, with an inch or so of accumulation at higher elevations. Another round of light precip moves in tonight after 8pm, for another inch or two of snow possible down to river level. East wind. 5% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow may see a few snow flurries in the morning, but then we’ll just have the Nothing cloud. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

Monday looks partly cloudy in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon with precip overnight. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early, the mid 30’s in the afternoon, and the low 30’s overnight. We’ll be in an inversion Monday night when precip hits, setting us up for light freezing rain between 7pm Monday and 4am Tuesday. Fingers crossed that we’re warmer than the predictions!

Upcoming Events

It’s Saturday. I’ll be in a Hakomi training all day (yay!). You can go for a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am with a fun group of people. You might even be able to run in showshoes if you get high up in elevation or stay in the clearcuts (see, clearcuts are good for something). The Cold Lap cyclocross ride leaves Dirty Fingers at 3pm today, rain, snow, shine, mud, etc., notwithstanding. There’s a 10k Nordic race at Meadows today with registration opening at 9am. Coming up tomorrow, there’s yoga by donation at Samadhi at 9am (my fav), Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm (YogaFaith), and at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm. There’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm. There’s also community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga tomorrow.

Have an awesome day today!
