Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Spring skiing is on tap this weekend. We’ll have warm weather and intermittent periods of high clouds. There might be just enough overnight clearing to snap the snow and give us a shot at corn. Also worth mentioning is the possibility of thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon. Looking deeper into the future… a few inches of snow are possible on Tuesday. Sub-freezing weather sticks around Monday through Wednesday or so. After that: back to spring skiing.

So, Saturday. Clear sky early adds high clouds and a chance of thunder later. We could see some rain showers out of this convection, or we might not. The freezing level will be 9000′ all day and 9500′ after midnight. Temps will be pushing 50 degrees at 5000′. Wind: S 5-10 in the morning, variable to 10 in the afternoon, and N 10-15 overnight. Expect a snap to the snow in the morning and slushy snow in the afternoon.

Mostly clear, warm weather is on tap for Sunday. Depending on the timing of an incoming system, the wind could be a problem late in the day. It also might not. The freezing level will be around 10,000′ all day. It’ll start dropping overnight. That leaves the mountain with warm areas and cool areas after midnight. That all takes place under partly high overcast sky overnight. No precip. Temps max out in the upper 40s in the morning and fall to 40 or so in the afternoon before dropping (in places) into the 20s overnight. Wind: N 10-15 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and NW 40-45 after midnight.

Monday looks partly high cloudy then clear. The freezing level will be all over the place in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Wind: NW 40-45 in the morning (enough to shut down some lifts), WNW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 20-30 after midnight.

A few inches of snow are possible Tuesday with the snow level around 2500′. Wednesday looks clear with the freezing level no higher than 4000′. Strong east wind might be in the cards on Wednesday along with sunshine. Those strong easterlies, for whatever reason, can be extra rough at Timberline. Rest of the week: dry and sunny. Let’s leave it there for now. Enjoy the corn snow this weekend!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Too bad waterskiing isn’t our thing – we would have had an amazing time with all that glass on Friday. Don’t you worry. We’re back to westerlies on Saturday afternoon. For those of you wanting warm easterlies (someone mentioned those to me), you should get a chance in the latter half of next week. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We have some big westerlies coming up!

For Saturday, we’ll have easterlies at 15 at Iwash and Stevenson to start. Those die off midday. Around noon, the westerlies kick in at 11-14 from Stevenson to The Dalles. They slowly, every so slowly build. Set your sights on the Executive Session (executives work 7 days a week, you know) for 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow Friday was 149-177kcfs, river temp is 49.64F, and high temp forecast is 73F and muggy. Oh, and there’s some instability. That could mess with the wind quality.

On to Sunday, the day you’ve all been waiting for! Models are still bouncing around the timing. If you wait until the evening, you’ll still get a nuker at the Hatch. The day starts with 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier and 11-14 east to Arlington. By early afternoon, we’ll have 26-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 18-21 at Rufus. Models hint at a short period of collapse at the Hatch early afternoon, and they suggest a resurgence later: 28-32 (Stevenson to Rufus) mid afternoon, and 30-35 Stevenson to Rufus in the evening (naturally – I have a 5-6pm thing I can’t blow off). High temp: 67F. Convection will still be part of the picture and could result in very gusty wind. This is why people paddle: gusty doesn’t matter.

On to Monday. The worst part of Monday is the drop in the high temp from 67 to 55. Sad! Best part: 27-30 right off the bat from Stevenson to Arlington. Thanks to incoming low clouds, the western Gorge falls off to the low 20s mid to late morning. Head somewhere between Lyle and Arlington (Threemile late) for 29-33. Lesser westerlies (low 20s) are forecast on Tuesday. Starting Wednesday, ridging and inland high pressure turns the wind around to easterlies. We’ll dig into that more as we get closer. As of today, Thursday looks windy enough to try for an easterly downwinder, but that’s likely to change. See you out there!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

The opening date for the mini-Amayah’s cart in Hood River is April 5th. Fuchsia Saturday is 4/13 at Fred Meyer. Saturday, 4/13 is also the Run with Wild 5k fundraiser for wildland firefighters. This takes place at the Twin Tunnels trail, west side. The White Salmon – Bingen community-wide yard sale is April 19th and 20th. On April 16th at 6pm, Master Gardener Denis Carlson gives a talk at the Hood River Library on controlling rodents in your garden. The HRATS fundraiser is 4/20. 4/20 is also a cleanup day at Jetty Island.

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Buy some and support your trails organization. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. Some areas of Post are still muddy (shady, cool areas), so consider choosing a different spot to ride. You’ll have Post all summer long! Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
