Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Saturday, and the snow is still falling on Mt. Hood. It will continue to fall, not in massive amounts, but for a longer stretch than we’ve seen so far this year. On Saturday, a couple more inches will arrive. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. Just .1-.2” water value (WV) will fall during the day, for 1-2” of snow. A trace to an inch will fall overnight. Wind will be W 25 all day, dropping to SW 15-20 in the evening. Here’s yet another reminder that Meadows runs shuttle buses from the Hood River Event Site to the mountain, saving you the hassle of dealing with the parking lots and the drive to and from.
Sunday looks snowy during the day and partly cloudy or clear overnight. The snow level will be around 2000′ in the morning, briefly near 5000′ midday, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ in the evening. About .6” WV falls during the day, for 4-6” of average density snow. A trace falls in the evening before the sky clears. Wind will be SW 15-20 early, SW 30 midday, and W 30 in the evening.
Monday looks clear in the morning with increasing clouds in the afternoon. Those clouds will drop a few flurries in the afternoon and evening for up to 1” of new snow. The snow level will be 1500′ all day, 2000′ in the evening, and 500′ after midnight.
The next system arrives on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, this one looks like it’ll have a snow level around 6000′, meaning it’s likely to fall as rain at ski area base elevations. Same goes for Wednesday during the day. The rain will switch back to snow on Wednesday afternoon, with 4-5” of snow predicted. Of course, that’s a long ways out to be so precise, so we’ll have to keep an eye on this.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the ways in which our minds lie to us and undermine us. The mind does this to protect us from emotional pain and physical harm. This warning system is offten wrong, or at least hypersensitive. Because of this, it’s important to learn to question the mind. Not distrust it, but to question whether it’s giving accurate information.
A good place to start is with fear. If it’s present, it’s worth checking out if the fear is accurate. It might be. It might also be based on past experiences and not related to the current situation. Fear of intimacy is a good example of this; when we are afraid of being close with others, we’re likely really afraid of the suffering that comes along with rejection. We are expecting rejection, predicting the future. More than that, we are living in a future where we might have to deal with a painful emotion. What’s really silly about this is that we’ve been rejected before, we’ve survived it, and yet we’re trying to avoid it. Kinda sounds ridiculous, knowing that we have the skills to survive.
Fear is often an indicator that we need to stop predicting the future and live more fully in the present. If we’re afraid, we’re often putting up protection against something pleasant in the now, merely because we’re afraid it might be gone at some point. When we do that, we miss out on a lot of living. Question your fear. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.
