Saturday. More wind than you can shake a stick at.

DSC_3512
This morning’s weak cold front has brought more clouds into the area than expected, and is also having a greater impact on river-level wind than expected. If you’ve been out on the river the last few days, you may consider this a welcome respite. For the rest of you, jonesing for a good session, you’ll just have to have a morning cup of coffee while you wait for this system to move through. Then you can score some unicorns and rainbows! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The 7am gradients today were reading .11 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc) with wind speeds of 18-22 at Swell and teens in other locations. River temp was 66 degrees, and flow at The Dalles was 176kcfs. 2374 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday. As this weather system moves through late in the morning, we’ll see the wind pick up to 22-25 from Viento to Doug’s, climbing further to 24-28+ from Rowena to Rufus this afternoon (likely at Swell and Hood River too) with 20-23 at Stevenson and Arlington.

High pressure offshore tomorrow combines with a trough of low pressure over the western PNW and a heat low in the desert. We like this setup. Yes we do. It’s the kind of setup that keeps the moving air focused on the river, where it can shape the moving water into smooth swell and head-high smoke. Expect 24-28 right off the bat on Sunday morning from Mosier to The Dalles for sure. If you’re out early, spend lots of time looking upwind for rainbows in the spray.

Viento to Hood River is a maybe tomorrow morning depending on marine cloud penetration. By mid to late morning, continuing through the evening, we’ll see 28-32 from Swell to Rufus, with Arlington joining in late and Stevenson likely staying in the low 20’s due to long-lasting cloud cover.

Monday looks like it’ll start with 18-22 and pick up to 25-29 late in the morning from Hood River to Rufus, maybe Arlington too. Expect low 20’s at Stevenson on Monday. Tuesday maxes out at 24-28 and Wednesday looks like 22-25.

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

As I was driving home from windsurfing yesterday, tired, tan and tousled, I got to thinking about how happy I was feeling in that moment and how fulfilling my life is in general. I smiled, because when I started working with a therapist several years ago, one of the first things I told her was this: “My life is so awesome, and I’m miserable. I don’t get it…”

Some of you may be feeling that exact thing right now – others look at your world and tell you your life is amazing. You, intellectually, know that it’s amazing. But inside, you’re not feeling the stoke. Maybe you even pretend to be the happy person with the amazing life while hiding your suffering away. After all, you have no right to complain, right?

Actually, you do. When there’s a lack of congruence between the way your life appears and the way you feel inside, and especially when you don’t understand why, you’re seeing a warning signal. You’re also seeing an opportunity for emotional growth that’ll lead to your inner world being as awesome as your outer world.

You can generalize this or micro-size it. When inner and outer appearances don’t match in a domain of your life, you’ve got an opportunity to study yourself and find more peace. These mismatches and misunderstandings lead to anxiety. Clearing them up will help you find more happiness. Sometimes you can do this by yourself. Other times you’ll want a good therapist to help you see what you can’t yet see. Plus, it feels good to have unconditional support from someone, even if you’re paying them. You gotta trust me on that one if you haven’t tried it!

So, to recap: it’s okay to say that you’re not as happy as your life appears. It’s okay to ask for help figuring that out. Doing these things will just make you more awesome. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 708 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
