Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a cloudy start to the day in the Gorge (mid-level clouds to be exact), and we all know that isn’t the best sign for wind. The picture is even more dire than that, as a vicious upper level low comes charging down from Extremely Aggressive Canada. Like all things Canadian (I’m totally joking, by the way, and making fun of the delightful, calm, polite, and friendly nature of Canadian culture in general), this low will disrupt EVERYTHING today. By everything, I mean the atmosphere will destabilize as the low approaches, impacting the wind quality and actually switching the wind around. We might even see thunderstorms and some rain.

So, this morning we’ll have west wind at 10-15 through the entire Gorge. It looks like (aka, best guess) is that the wind east of The Dalles will switch to E 10-15 after noon while western Gorge wind stays at gusty 10-15. Before this happens, it’s possible we’ll see a period of W 15-18 between Viento and Swell. Gusty 15-18, I mean. River flow is 200kcfs. Temp is 61 degrees.

Sunday sees the eastern Gorge continue to be impacted by this low: E or NE flow over the desert holds all day at 5-15 east of The Dalles. The western Gorge will likely see calm wind on Sunday for a nice flat-water play day. As of right now, Monday looks like a calm start with 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier after 2pm. The eastern Gorge will likely see N wind all day. Looking long-range, all we have is disagreement in the weather models, and thus no ability to create a forecast.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 12-15. Sunday: 7-11. Monday: 24-28. Sauvie’s Saturday: 12-15 late unless thunder. Sunday: 13-16. Monday: 15-18. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 5-10/15-20/30+, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Sunday: 10-15/5-10/20-25+, W 6′ @ 9. Monday: X/Y/Z, W 6′ @ 13.

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

Saturday morning is starting off cloudy, and the chance of sprinkles, rain, and/or thunder is pretty good this afternoon. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, rising to 11,000′ after midnight. Wind: e 5 early, NE 15 afternoon, NE 35+ overnight. Sunday looks partly cloudy. Free air freezing level: 11,000′. Wind: NE 35 early, NE 20 later. Monday looks clear with very high clouds possible late in the day. FAF: 12,000′ rising to 13,000′. Wind: NE 20 early and NW 15 in the afternoon.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning, and the only thing that will change about that is that the lower clouds may burn off and be replaced by thunderclouds and showers. Maybe. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 70’s later. Light westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks muggy and partly cloudy with a chance of afternoon thunder and/or showers east of Viento. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and near 90 in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Long-range temps have moderated a bit: it now looks like we’ll have 80’s and 90’s next week rather than 100’s.

Road and Mountain Biking

Only thing new to report is that one person attempted Gunsight last week. It took this person 1:48, which is pretty long, but apparently it is passable (no details on trees or snow – definitely an adventure ride). Saturday is the White Salmon Backyard Half, so don’t go biking on Hospital Hill until the afternoon. The front side, remember, is closed due to logging. That includes Millennium. Trailkeepers has work parties on Wygant Peak Saturday and Sunday (that is open to bikes). 12 Hours of Post and the Matt Lap are Saturday. The Gorge Ride from the Discovery Center is Saturday. There’s a work party on Borderline Saturday morning.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the A-Town Throwdown wind and standup paddle event at Arlington. The Gorge Ride, benefiting the Historic Columbia River Highway Trail, leaves the Discovery Center this morning, so watch for cyclists on Highway 20. There are trail work parties at Wygant Peak and on the Borderline Trail in Post Canyon this morning, and the 12 hours of Post Canyon race is going on all day today with the Matt Lap at 5:30.

The Wy’East Wonder ultramarthon is today, going from Gunsight Ridge down to Surveyor’s Ridge, and the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon is on Burdoin Mountain.

There’s another work party on Wygant Peak tomorrow. It’s also Father’s Day. There are free standup paddle demos for dads from 11 to 4 at the Big Winds shack at Hood River’s Event Site, and there are free art classes for kids and their parents at the Columbia Art Gallery.
