Saturday. Clouds, sun, and … spring!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s looking like we’re going to end up with a cloudy day on Mt. Hood for most of the day with clear sky overnight. We’ll even have a few sprinkles thrown into the mix, just to keep things interesting. The snow level will be 8000′ all day, dropping to 1000′ overnight under clear sky. We’ll see just a tenth of an inch of rain or so today, falling during the daylight hours. Wind today will be NW 20 all day, W 25 in the evening, and WNW 30 overnight.

Although models suggest a clear day on Sunday, it’s quite likely Mt. Hood will end up partly cloudy due to the strong NW wind and orographic precipitation. Let’s call it partly cloudy with occasional snowflakes and no accumulation. The free air freezing level / snow level will be 1000′ early, 3000′ by the afternoon, and less than 500′ overnight. Wind on Sunday will be WNW 30 in the morning, WNW 20 in the afternoon, and NW 10 after midnight.

Tuesday currently looks dry but cloudy. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ overnight. Wind will be light and variable in the morning and SW 20 in the afternoon and evening. Next chance for precip, likely in the form of snow-rain-snow, is Thursday and Friday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

In the dark pre-dawn hours, the wind was light and variable on the Columbia. That said, we had gradients of .04 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc), hinting at more wind later. Before I forget, flow is 435kcfs at The Dalles and the river temp is 44 degrees. Expect a light wind morning. As a weather system moves across the Cascades early this afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 24-28 east of Mosier. That should happen by 1pm or so.

Sunday sees high pressure off the coast and a trough of low pressure inland. Our friendly weather model, the GFS, suggests Dawn Patrol at 23-26 from Hood River to Doug’s, but that might not actually happen with the chilly overnight temps. Whatever happens for Dawn Patrol, you can expect 23-26 on Sunday from Swell to Doug’s with less wind (teens) further east. It’s likely that Stevenson will fill in during the afternoon.

Monday looks light and variable all day. Tuesday currently looks like E 20-25 in the morning with light and variable wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the ways that our minds keep us moving quickly through life is by predicting the future (even just a second from now) based on our past experiences. When we allow this process to manage our experience, we are set up to repeat the patterns of the past. We also lose out on much of the vitality of life. Let’s make this more concrete, shall we?

Let’s say you’re riding your bike up State Road in Mosier (it’s steep). You know from past experience that this hill hurts. You expect it to hurt. You tense up, using more energy than necessary. And so the hill hurts, confirming your expectations. However, if you’d really checked in with your body, you might have noticed that your legs weren’t hurting, or that your legs were hurting or your lungs weren’t, or perhaps you would have looked around and saw a bazillion grass widows, distracting you from your pain and leading to a lovely experience on the hill.

We do this all the time, unconsciously, with almost all of our experiences. If we can stop and really connect with what’s happening in a given moment, we might find that our experience contradicts our expectations. Or we may notice the expectations we have. By noticing them, we are able to work around them and have a different experience. That different experience will be, simply because it is new, more interesting, vibrant and engaging. And who doesn’t want a life with those qualities?!

All ya gotta do is learn to be in the moment and notice what’s really happening, not what you expect to happen. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just went outside, and it’s mostly cloudy and warm with a light west breeze. Gosh, you know it’s been a long, hard winter when 45 degrees feels warm. Anyway, expect a cloudy morning and partly cloudy afternoon with just a chance of a few sprinkles midday. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind early, moderate later. 2% chance of rainbows.

There’s a chance of frost above 1000′ on Sunday morning. Other than that, expect a mostly clear to partly cloudy day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50s’ in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Monday starts off cold and clear with frost. High clouds move in late in the day. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Update: Gorge 400 out of Wyeth, despite multiple reports to the contrary, is most definitely not open to bikes yet. There are sections of the trail buried under 4′ of snow from this winter’s avalanches. You could, theoretically hike the 400. Other than that, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Sandy Ridge are open. Post Canyon is not open to bikes yet (running, ok). Lots of downed trees, branches, and mud. Stay away, and tell your friends to stay away!

Upcoming Events

Today is Saturday. There’s a trail run with the Tri Club at 8am in Post Canyon. Wear your mud shoes. Other events today include a Garden Party at Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon (meal at 11, work from 1-3, tea from 3-5), the Gorge Roubaix bike race in the Mosier / The Dalles area, and the Take the Hill run at the Maryhill Loops Road. Sunday is the Gorge Gravel Grinder ride and Hood River Appreciation Day at Meadows.

Have an awesome day today!
