Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Looks like we’ll have plenty of wind for you to do your thing, whatever that thing is, between now and Wednesday. After that, models are all over the place for the second half of next week and July 4th weekend. What are they uncertain about? The placement of a ridge/heat low and just how hot it will get. That determines if/where it will be windy. So, let’s focus on the near-term future. It’ll be windy all of Canada Day weekend!

First things first, Northwave is clearing out backstock of GoFoil gear this morning to make way for new stuff. I picked up the awesome RS1300 (I’ve been SUP foiling on it since January) for $149. Other similar deals are in play. Big Winds also has a sale going on. In on-water news: there’s a surfski/OC race from Viento to Hood River tomorrow. If you’re playing between Tunnels and the White Salmon Bridge (currently functioning), watch for boats. Speaking of bridges, the Hood River Bridge remains closed; there’s a meeting at the Port at 10am tomorrow with updates. It will be streamed on YouTube.

Okay, Saturday. We have a weak system offshore (hence the clouds). That moves through this evening. Prior to doing so, it disrupts the wind. Early pressures were 30.00/29.95/29.94 for gradients of 0.05 and 0.01. Westerlies were generally less than 10mph to start with the exception of always-windy Viento: 16-19. Morning westerlies build to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier and stay light to the east. Early in the afternoon, the wind rises to 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s or maybe Avery. Best results will be found mid-afternoon on: gusty 24-28 from Mosier (or maybe Lyle) to Rufus with gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. Best results: probably Rowena and Doug’s. Arlington joins in the evening at 26-29. It’ll be decent there too, but not until late. River flow over the last 24 hours was 121-170kcfs, river temp is 64.22F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

Another system swings through on Sunday. We’ll be post-frontal early with 11-14 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Areas from Lyle eastward quickly rise to gusty 22-25. From Stevenson to Mosier, the wind holds in the mid teens for the morning. It rises to up-and-down 16-20 late morning or early afternoon and holds through the evening. Out east, from Lyle to Arlington, the wind rises to gusty 25-28 mid-afternoon and holds. High temp: 78F with clouds to start in Hood River and sun later.

Offshore high pressure ramps up during the day on Monday. The day starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell, maybe to Hood River or Mosier. Clouds will be present as far east as Viento or perhaps Hood River. Give it a few hours. By afternoon, we have the Classic Gorge Setup. 27-30 from Stevenson to Arlington seems reasonable. We’ll pick it apart a little more as we get closer. High temp: 77F.

Extended: Classic Gorge Setup sticks around Tuesday and potentially Wednesday. Look for a big day in the Corridor on Tuesday (the Rowena and Rufus stretches should be firing too), and a moderately strong Corridor day on Wednesday. Beyond that, there’s way too much range in model placement of a high pressure ridge and heat low to know what will happen. So, let’s wait a couple days. Have fun out there today!
