Saturday. 9/7. Gorge (not really windy) wind. Events. Brown Pow dirt news.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – nobody but you pays me to do this. So why is it here? This forecast started as a way for me to find better wind in the summer and better snow in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you too (almost) every day. Donate to keep it going! Make a $12 or larger donation by clicking on the sun and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Random Morning Thoughts
Perfect dirt equals Christmas Day in my world.

Wind forecast

Looks like we’ll see a relatively light wind weekend here in the Gorge. Expect east wind at 5-10 at Steven’s Locks by midday, switching to west wind at 5-10 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier late this afternoon. Tomorrow starts off glassy, but an approaching weak-and-dissipating weather system late in the day will bump the wind up to 15-18 after 2pm from Steven’s Locks to Mosier.

We’ll see one last westerly day at 10-15 on Monday before we see a switch to east wind and hot weather for at least a couple of days.

Dirt News

For your dirt bikers and 4-wheelers, some good news: Hood River County has reopened the Northwest Area, and only the Northwest Area, to OHV use. No, the Kreps and SDS have not reopened their lands, so Hospital Hill, Puke Hill, and Whoopdee remain closed due to fire danger. Despite that, it’s still Christmas Day in mountain bike world. Read on…

As of yesterday evening, the dirt was perfect in Post Canyon from top to bottom. They call it brown pow, and if you want some, get up there before the heat next week. If you want to shuttle, Hood River Adventures is there for you for $10/lap, 4 person minimum: 541-400-1216. If you want to avoid the crowds in Post Canyon, and it will likely be crowded today with the likes of me n’ my friends, don’t head to Sandy Ridge. Today is the last race of the Oregon Enduro Series, and Sandy will be full of racers and closed trails.

Other important Gorge news

Today is the Aluminum Man triathlon in The Dalles (I’m supposed to tell you there’s a sprint distance race, should you want to race “off the couch”) and Pacific Crest Trail Days in Cascade Locks. Tomorrow’s the Rural Rampage family bike race in Hood River.

For the non-sports crowd, there are a couple of fun events going on too – There’s the Civil War encampment and reenactment at the Fort Dalles Museum, and there’s the Fly-In at WAAAM in Hood River. Both those events are both days this weekend.

Have an awesome day today!
