Monday.

DSC_7650
For some folks, today is the first day of the workweek. For others, it’s just another day to spend on the water. If you’re part of the later, or an orchardist in need of spraying, or a fisherperson, or… here’s your forecast. Monday started off with gradients of .11 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc) with a 1024 high in the Pacific. High clouds were drifting above the land early this morning, a sign of impending gustiness in the wind field today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

You can expect 17-20 to start the day from Viento to Rufus. By late morning, we should see gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models aren’t suggesting much more, but given the gradients and offshore high, I think we’ll max out at 22-25 this afternoon from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles, probably at Rufus too. Given the atmospheric dynamics today, it’s likely the wind will be up-and-down and gusty, and possibly very unreliable in the Viento to Swell section of the mighty Columbia.

High pressure builds inland on Tuesday. Models suggest calm wind in the morning and very light easterlies in the afternoon. That’s one possibility. The other possibility is that we’ll see westerlies at 10-13 tomorrow from Steven’s Locks to Hood River. I wouldn’t place a bet on either of those at this point – let’s call it 50-50 odds.

There’s less question about the wind on Wednesday and Thursday. Both those days look to max out at east 15-20 midday from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Steven’s Locks (Stevenson and Cascade Locks). Both afternoons also look set to bring east wind at 5-8 from Viento to The Dalles, maybe all the way to Arlington. At this point, it’s looking like the west wind will return on Friday afternoon or evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

Sitting at my desk this morning, I can smell peaches. That’s because I have a sled of peaches on my kitchen island, thanks to an orchardist friend of mine. Apples come in buckets, pears come in bushels, but peaches come in sleds. Yes, plastic snow sleds. Why? Because if you stack peaches in a bucket, you bruise them. A sled holds 15-20 pounds of peaches in a single layer, just enough that you can eat them, make pie with them, and dehydrate them before they go bad.

Anyway, my friend gave me all these peaches (and apricots and nectarines) because she’s a kind, generous, awesome human being who feels good when she does nice things for others. She’s more interested in making people happy than in getting a few extra bucks from her friends.

What would the world be like if more people gave things away instead of trying to earn a few extra dollars? Of course, there are people who aren’t in a situation to do this, but many of us are. There are even some who could give away half and still be okay! We Americans don’t like to talk about income redistribution, but what if we made it a choice and called it generosity? Tithing? Halfing?

Giving to others makes us feel good when it’s a choice. (Taxes are not a choice, and therefore they can make us feel helpless and angry!) Receiving from others (unless we don’t have this skill) makes us feel loved and appreciated. Then we in turn appreciate the giver. We don’t have to do much to invoke this positive feedback loop – an extra-large tip, paying the bridge toll or coffee of the person behind us, volunteering our time… these can all create more gratitude and appreciation in the world. That right there, that’s a good thing. Try it today and see. Have an awesome day!
