Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and today’s your best shot at strong westerlies for this week. We return to lesser westerlies for the next couple of days. That’ll likely be followed by a switch back to light/variable wind and as warm, sunny weather continues.

Monday morning pressures were 30.07/30.05/30.01 with light west flow through the Gorge. Those gradients will rise as a cold front nears the coast and offshore high pressure helps with the synoptic-scale picture. By late morning, westerlies rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 to the east. Midday wind picks up to 24-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 17-21 at Avery and 10-13 farther east. Models suggest the late afternoon session will reap the most rewards from the approaching cold front and associated west side cooling. The wind holds at 24-28 and spreads all the way from Stevenson to Rufus. This kind of setup can cause the wind to drop between Viento and Swell, so be prepared for that possibility. River flow readings are 55-58kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 77F for Hood River.

Tuesday keeps the offshore high pressure. Clouds start the day in the west and sunshine kicks off the day east of the Cascade Crest. Models suggest dawn patrol at 15-18 from Viento to Swell. They also suggest the wind will die off rapidly. Let’s ignore that and go with 15-18 all day. If it fades, don’t be surprised, but don’t be surprised if there’s a bonus session. High temp: 74F.

Wednesday looks like light westerlies at best with light easterlies east of Mosier. Thursday and Friday look similar – probably not enough wind to get you on the river, but definitely little enough wind for an excellent road bike ride! Have a great week!
