Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mixed precip fell on the slopes last night, but it’ll quickly switch to snow today as a cold front swings through. Tuesday looks dry. A little snow on Wednesday gives way to dry weather to end the (traditional) work week. For the weekend, we still have model disagreement, so let’s hold off on the planning for now.

Monday’s weather quickly transitions from mixed precip to snow and eventually turns dry overnight. The snow level falls from 5500′ early to 2000′ in the afternoon to 500-1000′ overnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast by this afternoon. Call that 3-5” dense new snow. Overnight, up to 0.1” WE is forecast for up to 1” of lighter snow. Wind: SW 30-55 early quickly turns to W 30 during the day and fades overnight to W 10.

Tuesday will be partly cloudy. The free air freezing level starts at 0-1000′ and rises to 2500′ in the afternoon before falling to 500-1000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SE 10-15 in the afternoon, E 10 in the evening, and W 25 overnight.

Light snowfall Wednesday morning gives way to clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ under clear sky overnight. Just an inch or so of snow is forecast. Wind: W 25 all day drops to W 20 in the evening and SE 5-10 overnight.

Thursday looks sunny. The free air freezing level rises from 0′ in the morning to 3000′ in the afternoon and falls to 500′ overnight. Expect the strong sun to have some impact on afternoon snow quality. Wind: SE 10 in the morning, E 20 in the afternoon, and SE 25 overnight. Models disagree on exactly when snow will return to the slopes. Saturday? Not so likely. Sunday Maybe. Beginning of next week – definitely by then! Looks like some good groom this week after today’s snow. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
HRATS has a fundraiser at Ferment Brewing on the 16 from 6m to 8pm. Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
