Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

This week’s forecast looks a bit warmer than it’s been for the last month or so, and we’ve also got a stretch of mostly-dry weather through the start of the weekend. After that, it’s back to cool-enough weather with a few inches of snow here and there through the extended forecast window.

Tuesday starts high overcast and stays that way until the evening. The sky clears for a few hours, and then flurries arrive after midnight. The free air freezing level will be 0-1000′ this morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back to 1000-1500′ overnight. Just a trace to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for up to an inch of new snow. Wind: variable to 10 until midnight when the wind will rise to W 30mph.

Wednesday starts out with flurries or perhaps a quick inch of snow thanks to orographic assistance. The sky turns clear by midday. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-2000′ overnight. After mid-morning, after the inch of snow early in the day, no precip is forecast. Wind: W 30 in the morning, NW 20-30 midday, NW 10-20 in the evening, and ESE 10 after midnight.

Thursday looks clear and dry. The free air freezing level will be 0-2000′ (depending on location) in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ after midnight thanks to clear sky and radiational cooling. Wind: ESE 10 in the morning, SE 20 midday, SE 25 in the afternoon, and SSE 20 after midnight. Friday also looks clear and sunny during the day. Temps will be a bit warmer than Thursday, and the snow could be affected by this. Still… the groom will be great. Wind will be SE 20-25. Looking at the weekend… the current forecast is for a trace of snow on Saturday and up to a couple inches on Sunday. Looking deeper into the future, there’s a lot of range in temp predictions, but the top of that range keeps temps at 5000′ under 0C. In other words, any incoming precip will be snow. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Here’s this week’s forecast: east, west, east, east. For Tuesday, we start with very light easterlies all through the Gorge. They’ll build to 20-25 from Rooster to Viento mid-morning before dropping back to 10-15. River flow readings are 61-81kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 48F. Wednesday starts with westerlies and holds on to them all day. Early in the day, the wind will be 7-10 west of The Dalles and 11-14 east of The Dalles. Mid-morning wind rises to 21-24 east of The Dalles and 10-13 in the west. Models hint at the wind fading in the afternoon, but given the offshore high pressure, locations between Mosier and Avery could hold on to upper teens to low 20’s. Thursday starts with E 20mph from Rooster to Viento. Midday wind rises to 30-40 near Stevenson and 30-35 near Rooster. Afternoon wind drops to 20-25 to Viento and picks up to 10mph from Hood River to Arlington. High temp: 53F. Warm and sunny. Very nice.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
HRATS has a fundraiser at Ferment Brewing on the 16 from 6m to 8pm. There’s a seed swap and plant sale at Rockford Grange at 2pm on Sunday the 19th. April 2nd is an end-of-season party at Meadows Nordic. April 15th at 10am is the “Run with the Wild 5k” fun run to support the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
