Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Once again… not much happening out there. Do keep an eye on Friday for a chance of something bigger and better! Monday starts with pressures of 29.93/29.87/29.84 for rain-accompanied gradients of 0.06 and 0.03. If you can tolerate the rain, try Viento for gusty 20-24 this morning, gusty 18-23 from Mosier to Arlington between 11am and 2pm, or Stevenson to Rufus at 12-15 this afternoon. River flow readings are 66-96kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 57F. Tuesday starts with light and variable wind and rain. In the afternoon, we’ll have westerlies at 11-14mph from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 51F. Wednesday will be light and variable, as will Thursday. Next chance for stronger westerlies is late Friday as a beast of cold front drops down from the NW. Timing will be everything…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

“Rain – snow – rain – snow” is the forecast for the next week on Mt. Hood as a combo of atmospheric rivers and impressive cold fronts take aim at the Pacific Northwest. Monday’s going to be a rainy day on the mountain, but the weather will switch over to snow at the tail end of this system. The snow level will be 8000′ this morning, 6000′ this afternoon, 5000′ in the evening, and 2500-3000′ overnight. About 1.3” rain is forecast today. 0.1” water equivalent (WE) mixed precip in the evening gives way to 0.3” WE snowfall. Expect 2-3” fresh snow out of this. Wind: WSW 40-45 this morning, WSW 20 this afternoon, W 25 in the evening, and W 10 after midnight.

Light snowfall or flurries are forecast on Tuesday. The snow level hovers around 3000′ during the day and falls as low as 1500′ overnight. Just an inch of snow is forecast during the day and just a trace overnight – not enough to get you shredding, but enough to make things look pretty! Wind: W 10-15 most of the day and WSW 10-15 overnight.

Wednesday will be cloudy with light snow during the day and clear overnight. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ during the day. The free air freezing level (FAF) falls to 0-1000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day for a couple inches of light, fluffy snow. Wind: WSW 10-15 in the morning, N 5 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight.

Thursday starts clear, turns cloudy, and then adds some rain overnight. Friday starts with light rain and transitions to a truly epic downpour in the evening as an atmospheric river and strong wind take aim at Mt. Hood and drive intense orographics. The snow level plummets early Saturday, and Mt. Hood picks up snow through Monday. After that: models are all over the place! In other words, it’ll be a wild ride for the mountain over the next week!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Drizzle sticks around all day and increases to a steady moderate rain this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid to upper 50’s all day. Moderate westerlies. 2% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be rainy then drizzly then showery. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 96% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be sprinkly. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the mid to upper 40’s. Light and variable wind. 92% chance of rainbows. Snow level 2000-2500′. Expect frost and icy roads on Thursday morning.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

So much for the brown pow… trails will turn slick again today and stay that way for a while. The Family Man closure kicks off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
