Mt. Hood Forecast

Sunshine is the call on the mountain for Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday. Clouds return on Friday, but the first chance of significant new snowfall, enough to change the surface conditions, doesn’t happen until next Monday. Sharpen your edges if you’re going up!

Monday brings an other sunny day on the mountain, but it probably won’t be warm enough to turn the very hard snow surface to corn. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. Wind: NE 15-20 early, NE 10 in the afternoon, and E 15-20 overnight.

Tuesday will be sunny and a bit warmer by afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. That might be just enough warmth for corn snow during the day. Wind: E 15-20 early, W 10 in the afternoon, and WNW 20-25 overnight.

Wednesday will be sunny on the slopes and cloudy below 4500′ or so. High clouds move in overnight, and some light flurries start up after midnight. No accumulation. Freezing level: 5500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: WNW 20-25 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Scattered flurries continue Thursday and Friday with the snow level between 500′ and 1000′. The weekend currently looks dry and cold, but a stronger, wetter system is in about 85% of the model ensemble members for Monday. After that, we head into a colder, wetter pattern with the potential for lots of mountain snow and even a bit of snow for the lowlands!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
