Monday. Maybe I can remember to hit “post” on the forecast today!

DSC_2354
Well, here we are on another windy Monday morning. I know it was windy last Monday because I went windsurfing on my way to school. I showed up sweaty, sandy, and smelling like wetsuit and Columbia for my first day of grad school: #GorgeNormal… It looks like there’s another opportunity for that today – as you know, Rooster is right on the way from Hood River to PSU! And… because it’s windy at Rooster and not in Hood River, it’s much warmer there and much more conducive to early morning windsports: at 7am, it was 42 degrees in Hood River and 61 degrees at Rooster Rock. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

You can expect the Rooster sensor to read 30-35 this morning (it seems to read comparably with Arlington, not with Swell) for 3.7/7m conditions. The wind will back off to 23-26 this afternoon, becoming light overnight. The Steven’s Locks area will also be windy today: 16-19 early, 24-28 mid-morning for the peak session, falling off to 18-23 this afternoon.

Tomorrow starts off with light and variable wind and slowly picks up out of the west. You can expect light wind all morning, picking up to 14-17 by 2pm from Stevenson to Mosier and then picking up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Wednesday looks like a light wind day, and so do Thursday and Friday, at least for now.

Out on the coast, there’s not much happening. Today: Light n’ Variable (LTV), NW swell 3′ @ 11 seconds. Tomorrow: S 10-15, W 2′ @ 12. Wednesday: S 10-15, W 3′ @ 12.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those beaches for the next three days, but you’ll likely find rainbows at both places on Wednesday morning.

Random Morning Thoughts

Bessel Van Der Kolk wrote an amazing trauma therapy book called “The Body Keeps the Score”. I had an experience a couple days ago that I’d like to call, “The Body Keeps the Keys.”

I have a no-fail solution for keeping track of my keys. When I walk in the house, I drop them on the rug in front of my door. That way I know where they are. Works like a charm, I tell you! When I went to leave my house the other day, the keys weren’t there. Luckily I have a spare car and house key, but that didn’t stop me from stressing over my PO box and mailbox keys – $75 to rekey each didn’t sound appealing.

I looked and looked and looked for my keys. I knew they were around – I’d used them to get a copy of Shakti Woman from my mailbox the night before.

I tried to logically think my way through this. Still no keys. So I let my body take over. I sat very still, and I let my body use muscle memory to recreate the scene of walking over to the mailbox, opening the little door, pulling out the book and junk mail, and dropping my keys into … MY APRON POCKET!!!

The body remembers stuff. It remembers trauma. It remembers safety. It remembers all sorts of things that you have no conscious access to. You can leverage this to understand yourself better (and to find your keys). Just sit quietly, close your eyes, and feel into your body. Sit with your present experience and sink more deeply into the sensations that pique your curiosity. If you find yourself thinking about what you’re experiencing (that’s normal), just drawn your attention back to the object of your curiosity. It’s fun, it’s relaxing, and it’ll create all sorts of insight. And maybe, just maybe, you too will find something awesome that you’ve lost, perhaps something more important than keys… childlike awe, wonder and joy, for example. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I hate to say it, but it’s another amazing fall day here in the Gorge. This is the time of year when I forget that it’s possible for it to be cold and grey and rainy. So, join me in forgetting that it could ever be different, and take advantage of this amazing day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 80’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks sunny with some high clouds. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows. Wednesday gets the remnants of a weak weather system. It’s possible we’ll see a few sprinkles. It’s more likely we’ll just see a cloudy morning and sunny afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. No wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s entirely possible that it will rain this weekend, meaning we may see some change in the trails. In the meantime, I’d like to remind you that Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are still closed, even for that person all kitted out with a camelbak and mountain bike, headed down Jewitt midday yesterday on her way to ride Hospital Hill. It’s closed for all of us, even hikers. Please respect the landowners’ wishes, or you may cost everyone access for all time.

The road biking looks affected by the east wind today, but it’s still going to be warm and beautiful. Wednesday looks fantastic for road biking: cool, partly cloudy, and no wind at all.

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. McCurdy Farms – the secret fruit stand not on the Fruit Loop map. Visit today.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday. I will go to school today, and you will watch the Seahawks play the Lions at 5:30. My professor says we can’t have our phones on during class, but since I’m a 12, this is like a family emergency, right? Anyway, if you’re not watching the game, there are other things to do today: Free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Free yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30pm and at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at the same time. There’s free Zumba at the Mt. Hood Community Center at 6:30, and there’s Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine (not free) at 6pm.

Tomorrow night is $12 Prime Rib night at Cebu. It’s also pickup touch rugby at 6pm at the Hood River Marina. There’s triathlon practice at Mayer Park at 6pm (that’s gotta end soon – Mark?). There’s free Zumba again tomorrow night at 6:30 at the Community Center in Parkdale, and there’s Community Yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7pm. Tomorrow is my favorite event: community meditation with our local monastics from Pacific Hermitage. 6:30pm, Yoga Samadhi, free, no pressure, totally chill mindfulness meditation followed by Ajahn Sudanto’s random evening thoughts and question session. Two thumbs up for that one.

Have an awesome day today!
