Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Monday, everyone! Yesterday I woke up so late and so beaten down by a cold that I didn’t write a forecast. Don’t catch whatever it is that’s going around – it’s nasty! Anyway, on to the forecast. It seems we’re moving into Autumn a bit before the official start; cold overnight temps combine with a series of weather systems for late starts and gusty westerlies.

Monday starts out light and variable and chilly. The wind will slowly build to 10-13 this afternoon from Stevenson to Lyle. By afternoon, I mean after 2pm. Tuesday looks similar, but a touch stronger as offshore high pressure helps out a bit. We’ll have calm wind early and 15-18 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles.

A weak frontal system approaching Wednesday afternoon will bump up the wind strength but also the gustiness. The day starts with 15-18 from Viento to Mosier (although it may actually be less due to the cold). Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus with higher speeds possible between Lyle and Doug’s. Wind speeds drop back into the mid teens on Thursday.

BONUS: Jones Monday: 5-8. Tuesday: 10-13. Wednesday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Monday: 5-8. Tuesday: 13-16. Wednesday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Monday: 15-20/20-25/25-30, W swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20/25-30, S 3′ @ 15 turning to W 3′ @ 15. Wednesday: W5/N5/N25-30, W 3′ @ 12.

Random Morning Thoughts

Feeling isolated can lead to all sorts of trouble. A lack of social connections is linked to both mental and physical health problems. The interesting thing is that this seems to play out on a micro scale too. Even if a person has social connections, they may feel isolated during certain circumstances. In these moments, difficult feelings may become stronger.

I think of this in relation to nighttime anxiety. Lots of people experience this at some point during life; middle-of-the-night thoughts following a midde-of-the-night pee lead to tossing and turning. It’s worth checking out why those thoughts are so powerful in the wee hours.

Part of this, I think, is a sense of aloneness. We like to have company when we’re facing difficult things. In the middle of the night, when everyone is asleep and unreachable, we can feel alone. Next time you find yourself beset by worries in the dark hours, check it out. Is your anxiety being exacerbated by the fact that you’re carrying it alone at that moment in time? If so, remind yourself of all the people who love you. Imagine them at your side. See if that doesn’t help you get back to sleep. May you be well rested. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

About a tenth of an inch of rain fell yesterday, and that might even be enough to make Post slippery for the morning. This afternoon, tho… BROWN POW! I also have a report of perfect dirt on Falls Creek. Fire season is not yet over, so Whoopdee, Hospital, and Underwood remain closed, as do moto trails.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and if you’re not at work today, there’s a free yoga class at 8;30 at Flow in Hood River, free mindfulness practice at noon at Trinity Body Arts, and $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. After work activities include yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, Kickball at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen at 6, and Zumba at Mid-Valley Elementary in Odell at 6:30.
