Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong westerlies are on the docket for the next couple of days. An offshore trough of low pressure and associated instability will add a touch of unpredictability as well as some gustiness. After Tuesday, high pressure guilds over the Northwest. Models disagree on the direction and strength of the wind; while they are predicting easterlies, a more likely scenario is light to moderate westerlies for the middle of the week.

For Monday, we have an offshore trough coupled with high pressure near southern Oregon and atmospheric instability form the Cascade Crest eastward. Early gradients were .12 and .03, suggesting that the Corridor and near east are your best bets today. We’ll have 18-22 from Viento Hood River early with 10-13 everywhere else. The wind quickly builds to 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles through midday. We’ll probably see the wind drop off in the west after that, with gusty 20-25 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of there, from Rowena to Rufus, the wind holds at gusty 25-28 for the rest of the day. Roosevelt: 14-17 max.

Dynamic weather on Tuesday complicates the reliability of the forecast. That said, models like the idea of big gradients, if not consistent wind. Morning westerlies start at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon: 28-32 from Stevenson to Rufus with 26-29 near Roosevelt. Most reliable locations on Tuesday, given the dynamics, will be Stevenson, Doug’s, Avery, and Roosevelt.

On to Wednesday: models like the idea of northerly flow over the region due to offshore high pressure. Models tend to struggle with this, often predicting no wind for the Gorge. Let’s go with 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. Same on Thursday, with the caveat that Thursday is actually way too far out for an accurate forecast!

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Monday: NW5/NW5/20-25, W swell 2′ at 8 seconds. Tuesday: NW10/NW10/20-25, W 2′ @ 7. Wednesday: 15-20/25-30/30-35+, W 2′ @ 8. Jones Monday: 21-24. Tuesday: 21-24. Wednesday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: 13-16. Wednesday: 11-14.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
