Gorge Wind Forecast
Offshore high pressure is dwindling, and that will knock down the wind speed for the next few days. We’ll be saved from being becalmed by increasing heat in the desert. That’ll increase cross-Cascade gradients Wednesday and out into the latter half of the week.
Monday starts with weak onshore flow and nothing around to nudge it upwards. Temps don’t quite equalize across the Cascades this afternoon, but they come close. WYSIWYG today: 13-16 from Viento to Hood River for much of the day. Models suggest a late morning dip to 10-13 followed by a resurgence to 13-16 from Mosier to Rufus this afternoon with 10-13 west of Mosier. River flow readings are 154-258kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 75F.
A weak weather system is scheduled to impact the Gorge and surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon. This does not bode well for the predictability and reliability of the wind. The day starts calm or light and variable. Early afternoon, the west wind climbs to 8-11 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models suggest that the incoming system, which could trigger a bit of drizzle, will nudge the westerlies to gusty 15-18 from Viento to Avery mid afternoon. 10-13 at Stevenson. Light/variable east of Avery. Don’t be surprised if the wind underperforms. High temp: 78F and increasingly muggy as the day progresses.
Clouds stick around in the west on Wednesday, and hotter air surges in to the desert. With low pressure settled off the coast and south flow above, we’re relying completely on these thermal gradients. Morning wind will be 5-10 west of The Dalles and 11-14 to the east. Afternoon: 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus with 14-17 at Arlington. 24-27 is not out of the question between Swell and Doug’s, but it’s far from certain. High temp: 78F and muggy. Thermally-driven westerlies are forecast to stick around through the end of the week. Have a great day!

Drizzle is possible in the evening. Temps start in the mid 50’s and end in the upper 70’s. Calm wind early. Moderate westerlies later. 11% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 70’s later. Muggy. Moderate to strong westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows.

Today is Independence Day, as you knew. There’s a parade this morning and fireworks tonight. The Kollas Cranmer run is the morning from Odell to Hood River. This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is Kiteboard for Cancer at the Hood River Event Site. The Oregon 12/24 hour mountain bike race takes place in Bend this weekend.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! Falls Creek sis open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. It is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
