Gorge Wind Forecast

That rest day you’ve been looking for arrives this week, but first you’ve got to make it through a couple more days on the river! Monday’s pre-dawn wind starts at 21-24 from Viento to Hood River with gradients of 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.02 (dls-psc). Models insist that mid-morning wind will be 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles, so let’s go with that. If it dips, it’ll be back: predictions for the afternoon are 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 16-19 from Lyle to Doug’s and light and variable wind to the east. River flow is 112kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 90F.

Tuesday’s your day to go all out, because you’re likely to be resting or doing something else on Wednesday. Tuesday starts with 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 to the east. That morning lull is present in the models again. We’ll include it in the forecast. If it happens on Monday, it’s likely to happen Tuesday. If not, ignore the prediction and stay on the water: 18-21 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 at Stevenson and the eastern Gorge late morning. Afternoon wind forecast is 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s with Rufus likely to join late afternoon. East of there: 8-11 late in the day. High temp forecast is 86F for Hood River.

Wednesday brings lower pressure offshore and higher pressure in the desert. Those pressure are headed the wrong direction for wind. The day starts with 8-11 from Viento to Swell and picks up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of Mosier: light wind all day. High temp: 91F. Thursday looks to max out at 8-11 (96F), and Friday looks light and variable (97F, try Jones Beach or Nuke Alley for better wind). Weekend: a bit uncertain. Sunday is more likely to be windy than Saturday, which just looks hot AF. Enjoy the wind and the rest days this week!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
