Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

You’ll be delighted to hear, I think, that there’s hope (snow!) in the forecast. A dry start to the week gives way to rain Wednesday night followed by lots of snow through the weekend.

Today is Monday, and it’s Rotary Night at Meadows. Speaking of Meadows, they have shuttle buses from the Hood River Event Site which allows you to skip their parking lot issues, especially if you’re going up late enough that you’ll be forced to park at HRM. Today’s weather will be sunny for much of the day, cloudy in the evening, and rainy after 9pm. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 6000′ when the precip hits, and 4000′ after midnight, for a little snow by daybreak Tuesday. The mountain will see about 1/4” rain followed by an inch of snow tonight. Wind today will be S 10 in the morning and S 20-25 in the evening.

Tuesday looks mostly cloudy with intermittent snow flurries. The snow level will be 3500-4000′ all day, rising to 6000′ after midnight. The mountain will receive a trace to an inch of new snow during the day. Wind will be SW 20 all day.

Wednesday starts off with high clouds (and a pretty sunrise). Rain starts up around 7pm and turns to snow after midnight. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 7500′ midday, 6500′ when the precip hits, 4500′ around midnight, and 3500′ early Thursday. About 1.5” of water value (WV) will fall. It’s a bit hard to tell what will be snow and what will be rain. Best guess is 3/4” rain followed by 3-6” of snow. Wind will be SW 20 early and SW 35-40 after 4pm.

Thursday looks very snowy. YAY! The snow level will be 3500′ during the day and 1000′ after midnight. The current run of the GFS shows 1.2” WV during the day, for 11-14” of new snow. There’s also .4” WV for Thursday night, for 4-5” of additional snowfall. The Euro is less optimistic, but still contains snow. Another round of heavy snow arrives Saturday afternoon into Sunday, according to the GFS, with less snowfall on the Euro.

Random Morning Thoughts

Many people, perhaps even you, make New Year’s resolutions. These are often carry a sense of making up for a past lack. “I ate too much last year and gained weight, and I’m going to do better this year,” for example. There are at least two glaring problems with this. First, we start off with the assumption that we’ve done something wrong and are therefore “not good enough” as we are now. Second, we plan to rely on self-control and willpower to achieve our goals.

As a recent NY Times article points out, we are unlikely to achieve our resolution by applying “grit”.

Instead, we need to phrase our life changing plans in forms that will bring up positive emotions. If we want to lose weight, for example, we might phrase this in the form of being able to spend more time exercising with beloved friends who are faster. We might want to keep our house cleaner so we can feel proud and connected to our partner.

To motivate ourselves, we can’t rely on self-flaggelation. Instead, when we feel tempted to violate our resolution, we need to bring pro-social emotions to mind. These will increase our ability to resisit temptations. These emotions don’t even need to be connected to the resolution.

We can reflect on how grateful we are to live in the Gorge, for example. We can reflect on how proud we are of a recent accomplishment. We can bask in the love of our friends and family. Whatever… if you feel tempted, bring to mind and bask in an emotion that’s positive and makes you feel connected to others. Give it a shot. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.
