Gorge Wind Forecast

“Pretty much nothin’” is the wind forecast for today (it’s Monday), but westerlies return starting Tuesday. With low pressure dominating the offshore picture, we’ll be relying on thermals and help from California’s coastal high to drive our westerlies. Details aside, you’ll probably find enough wind to get on the river. For Monday, expect a very hot day (100) with increasing humidity and near-zero wind. It’s possible we’ll see the easterlies pick up to 10-13 from Rooster to Viento for a couple hours mid-morning, but they won’t last long. After 5pm, westerlies return at 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow is 155kcfs and temp is 68 degrees. High temp today: 100. Some (but not a lot!) marine air filters into the Willy Valley on Tuesday morning. Looking at our offshore situation, it’s not great. Weak high pressure far offshore is interrupted by a passing little low. However, the desert will get enough of a jump on heating for moderate westerlies. The day starts with 18-21 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 to Rufus. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 to Rufus. High temp: 91. A little low sneaks in from California late on Wednesday, really throwing a curveball at the Northwest. Much of the day will be unaffected by this, thankfully. Morning westerlies start at 13-16 from Viento to Swell with light wind elsewhere. We’ll see peak wind at 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. That low slithers into the region early to mid-evening, likely setting off thunderstorms. That’ll end your water time! High temp: 95. Looking longer-range… that low most likely ends up in the desert on Thursday morning for strong westerlies accompanied by a good chance of thunder. Westerlies weaken during the day, but still hold in the 20’s. Friday also looks quite windy, but probably not as reliable in the Corridor as in the desert. Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding. Please try and find someplace other than the Hood River Waterfront to play.
