Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather has turned rather wintry, or at least fall-like, out there, and you’ll have to chase the wind around to catch a few hours. You’ll have a chance out east this afternoon. The next couple of days don’t look great, although the ensembles for Wednesday hold out some hope.

Monday brings a weather system through this morning. Pressures were 30.07/30.05/30.01 to start the day. Take the hint, and plan to drive. Morning wind will bounce around between “light” and 15mph out of the west. After 2pm or so, head east of The Dalles, from Avery to Threemile, for gusty 23-27. Some ensemble members take the wind speeds higher, so be prepared for that. West of The Dalles, rain sticks around with gusty 11-14mph westerlies. River flow readings are 62-93kcfs, river temp is 62F, and high temp forecast is just 54F.

Tuesday doesn’t look great for wind: 11-14 out east to start the day with nearly calm wind in the west. By afternoon, when a beast of a rainy system moves in, the wind will become very light westerly. High temp: 55F. Wednesday sees lots of variety in the ensembles, so it’s difficult to make a call. There’s a decent chance of at least a few hours of 18-22+, but no ability to actually predict the wind yet. With the exception of Thursday (perhaps), weather systems continue their assault on the PNW through the weekend. This isn’t great for wind, but it’s great for ending fire season!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

After a very wintry Sunday, the mountains have returned to their regularly scheduled autumn weather. It’s raining this morning. Snow returns tonight, Tuesday, and Wednesday before warmer, wetter weather sets up for the weekend.

The snow level Monday morning starts at 6500′. It falls to 4000′ or so this afternoon and stays that way overnight. About 0.25” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. Call it half rain and half snow for an inch of new at 5000′. Overnight, 0.2” WE is forecast for 2-3” more accounting for orographic effects. Wind: W 45 this morning, WNW 35-40 this afternoon, W 35 this evening, and WNW 25-30 after midnight.

Tuesday will be snowy. The snow level starts around 4000′, holds through much of the day, and drops to 3000-3500′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day for 3” new. Another 0.9” WE is forecast overnight for 7-10” additional snow. Wind: WNW 25-30 in the morning, WSW 20-30 in the afternoon, and W 40 overnight.

Wednesday holds on to some orographic flurries during the day and scattered flurries overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ or so all day and all night. About 0.2” WE is forecast for this period for a couple inches of standard-issue Mt. Hood snow. Wind: W 40 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 15-20 overnight.

Dry and warmer conditions are forecast Thursday daytime before a warm and wet, potentially very wet, system moves in Friday and possibly for the weekend. Models aren’t in agreement yet on anything other than the “warm” part of the extended forecast. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Teacup has work parties scheduled Wednesday (26) and Saturday (29). HRATS have a work party at Family Man scheduled for Saturday (29). Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

It was brown pow in Post yesterday (and crowded), but it’s raining again now and will be slick. Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
