Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

We have come to the end of the biggest storm cycle in years – over 20 feet of snow fell since the resorts opened. Models have a bit of rain today, dry weather until Thursday, and then a bit of snow. Generally speaking, the forecast for the next couple of weeks (subject to change!) looks drier and warmer than the last month. Note: sorry about the lack of forecast yesterday – the UW website was down and with it my models. Also, I will be away from the computer next weekend and will not be putting out a forecast.

Looking at Monday, we have a warm front sliding in from the west. Temps are all over the place on Mt. Hood with a result of mixed precipitation. As an example, the temp at the base of Meadows is 26F, but the temp at the top of Mt. Hood Express is 31F! So, the effective snow level will be around 5000′ this morning (but won’t guarantee snow!) and 6500′ this afternoon and overnight. Fortunately, just 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) mixed precip is forecast, and that will be this morning. Overnight: dry. Wind: SW 15-25 during the day, WSW 20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight.

It appears that precipitation will stay to the north of the Columbia River on Tuesday. Mt. Hood stays cloudy dry, most likely. Temps will be above freezing on the slopes with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 6500′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. Wind: SW 15-20 during the day, WSW 20 in the evening, and SW 15-25 overnight.

Wednesday looks cloudy, then high overcast, then clear from mid-afternoon on. It is possible a bit of precip could fall overnight, but the timing isn’t clear yet. The FAF will be 10,000′ early, 12,000′ by late morning, and it’ll fall to 5500′ after midnight. Wind: SW 10-25 during the day rising to SW 20-40 after midnight. As of this morning, it looks like 3-5” of snow will fall during the day on Thursday with the snow level falling to 2500′ briefly and rising back to 10,000′ under sunny sky on Friday. Enjoy your week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind on Tuesday morning will be in the 40-45 range at Rooster with 20-25 at Viento and Stevenson. Midday wind picks up to 30-35 at Stevenson. In the afternoon, the wind drops to 20-25 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Rooster. River flow is 161kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 35F. Tuesday starts with 20-25 at Stevenson and 10-15 at Rooster. Afternoon: 10-15 at Stevenson and 10ish at Rooster. High temp: 39F. Wednesday kicks off with 10-15 at Stevenson and 15-20 at Rooster. Afternoon: 25-30 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. High temp: 40F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy sky this morning gives way to light freezing rain (up to 0.15”) which ends by noon or 1pm. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and low 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Tuesday will be cloudy, but rain will likely stay to the north. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be Nothing cloud. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and upper 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
